This paper analyses the Liberian crisis from the domestic dimension and from a regional perspective. The author presents a systematic analysis of how internal conflict immerses and influences neighbouring states by questioning and differentiating between the impact of internal conflicts on neighbouring states and the strategies taken by these with respect to such conflicts. To better appreciate the Liberian crisis and discern between the variety of endeavours undertaken by neighbouring states, the article explores the disparate motivations for their involvement in this crisis. This paper has a dual purpose. Firstly, it attempts to analyze the drastic change of ECOWAS into a military organisisation, the juridical basis for its interventive authorizations and possibilities for implementation. Added to that are theoretical discussions of collective security, intervention and their characteristics. Secondly, an analysis of ECOWAS decisions to intervene in Liberia is discussed with respect to international organisations like the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity, likewise that of the powers the United States and the former Soviet Union.
