Part-time university undergraduate students participation in the Canadian postsecondary education system has grown substantially over the past several decades. This growth raises questions concerning the factors influencing students' decisions to enrol full or part-time. The research presented here is based on the 1973-74 and 1983-84 National Postsecondary Student Surveys conducted by Statistics Canada and examines the changing influence of demographic, regional, socioeconomic and financial factors on registration status. The results indicate: (1) a diminishing impact of regional forces in choosing part-time registration status; (2) a dramatic increase of women in part-time studies (particularly older women); (3) that being married and having dependent children has become significantly less of a barrier for enroling part-time; (4) that students from more educationally advantaged backgrounds were more likely to register full-time in both survey years and the effect of parents' education remained unchanged across the surveys; (5) students that either applied for a government loan or borrowed to finance their studies were more likely to enrol full-time; this pattern was clearer for both sexes in 1983/84 than in 1974/75. These detailed findings are evaluated in terms of social changes in Canada, particularly with respect to women's increased participation in education and the labor market. While part-time university students constitute a relatively new clientele in higher education, their number and diversity is likely to grow, increasing our need to acquire new and more detailed information. ; L'importance des étudiants universitaires de premier cycle à temps partiel dans le réseau canadien de l'éducation postsecondaire s'est grandement accrue au cours des dernières décennies. Cette croissance soulève des questions quant aux facteurs influençant la décision des étudiants de s'inscrire à plein temps ou à temps partiel. La recherche dont il est ici question se fonde sur les enquêtes nationales sur les étudiants du niveau postsecondaire réalisées en 1973-1974 et 1983-1984 par Statistique Canada. Elle étudie l'évolution de l'influence des facteurs démographiques, régionaux, socio-économiques et financiers sur le genre d'inscription. On a tiré les conclusions suivants. 1) Les facteurs régionaux ont de moins en moins d'influence dans la décision de s'inscrire à temps partiel. 2) Le nombre de femmes (particulièrement de femmes plus âgrées) a fortement augmenté chez les étudiants à temps partiel. 3) Le fait d'être marié(e) et d'avoir des enfants à charge est devenu un obstacle beaucoup moins important à l'inscription à temps partiel. 4) Les étudiants provenant de milieux ayant reçu une meilleure éducation étaient plus susceptibles de s'inscrire à plein temps, dans les deux années d'enquête, et l'influence de l'éducation des parents est demeurée la même d'une enquête à l'autre. 5) Les étudants qui avaient soit demandé un prêt du gouvernement soit contracté un emprunt pour financer leurs études étaient plus susceptibles de s'inscrire à plein temps, et cela se vérifiait davantage en 1983-1984 qu'en 1973-1974, chez les étudiants des deux sexes. Ces conclusions détaillées sont évaluées sur le plan des changements sociaux au Canada, particulièrement pour ce qui est de la participation accrue des femmes à l'éducation et au marché du travail. Alors que les étudiants universitaires à temps partiel constituent une clientèle relativement nouvelle de l'éducation supérieure, leur nombre et leur diversité continueront vraisemblablement à augmenter, rendant ainsi encore plus grand notre besoin de nouveaux renseignements plus détaillés.

Concluding comments are offered to this volume, which has explored the reciprocal relationship between the city of Toronto, Ontario, & its immigrants, focusing on developments since 1970. The history of immigration policies at both the federal & provincial levels reveals an emphasis on inclusiveness, though many barriers have also been identified to immigrants & refugees attaining full social inclusion & equality. Several specific factors contributing to the unequal distribution of goods, services, opportunities, & resources to newcomers are identified, along with ways in which these might be addressed by policymakers. An introductory overview examines ethnic diversity & interethnic relations in Toronto, Ontario, one of the most plural major cities in the Western world, highlighting the reciprocal impact of the city & its immigrants on each other. Focusing on the processes of social inclusion & exclusion, various perspectives on integration are reviewed, with particular attention to the ways in which newcomers become part of the social, cultural, & institutional fabric of existing communities. Patterns of immigration & settlement in Toronto are traced since the end of WWII, focusing on trends over the last 3 decades of the 20th century in terms of immigration policy, the sociodemographic composition of immigrant groups, employment & educational opportunities & achievements, housing, health status, & community integration. Implications for future policy & research are considered, arguing that the major concern should be on factors that block opportunities for immigrants, particularly low resource bases & inadequate service delivery. Ce travail réexamine la nature psycho‐sociologique du modèle d'acquisition de situation dans le Wisconsin dont une analyse récente de Wilson et Portes tend à prouver qu'elle est en grande partie erronnée. Elle met particulièrement en question l'hypothèse formulée, et non prouvée, de Sewell et Compagnie que l'auto‐évaluation intervient dans les effets des résultats scolaires concernant les aspirations à une situation et les variables de l'acquisition. Basé sur un large échantillonnage d'élèves de 12e année de l'Ontario tiré d'une récente étude en profondeur, nos résultats vont à l'encontre de ceux de Wilson et Portes, réaffirmant dans leur ensemble la nature psycho‐sociologique du processus d'aqcuisition de situation et en particulier le rôle critique joué par des processus réflexifs tels que l'auto‐évaluation dans ce cadre.This paper reexamines the social‐psychological nature of the Wisconsin status attainment model which a recent analysis by Wilson and Portes purports to have largely disconfirmed. In particular, it puts to test the hypothesis formulated, but not tested, by Sewell and associates that self assessment mediates the effects of academic performance on status aspirations and attainment variables. Based on a large sample of Ontario grade 12 students drawn from a recent longitudinal study, our results contradict those of Wilson and Portes, reaffirming in general the social‐psychological nature of the status attainment process and in particular the critical role played by such reflexive processes as self‐assessment in it.

En utilisant le Canada comme exemple, nous tentons de déterminer jusquà quel point les immigrants adoptent l'identitée ethnique de leur pays d'accueil, empruntant ou non une identité ethnique d'assimilés ou d'intégrés. Nous portons une attention particulière à l'impact de I'intégration économique, du nombre d'années écoulées depuis lémigration, de l'origine ethnique et de l'appartenance à une minorité visible sur l'identité ethnique. Étonnamment, nos résultats démontrent que les indicateurs du succès économique tels que le statut professionnel, l'emploi et les revenus antérieurs n'ont aucune influence sur léventualité que les immigrants endossent ou non l'identité de leur société d'accueil. L'analyse statistique de cet article s'appuie sur la documentation actuelle sur l'acculturation.Using Canada as an example, we examine the extent to which immigrants take on the ethnic identity of their host country, thus displaying either an assimilated, integrated, or neither assimilated nor integrated ethnic identity. We pay particular attention to the impact of economic integration, years since migration, ethnic origin and visible minority status on ethnic identity. Surprisingly, our findings reveal that indicators of economic success such as employment status, occupation and prior earnings do not have an impact on whether immigrants will assume the identity of their host society. The statistical analysis for this paper is situated within the existing acculturation literature.

The humanities, the social sciences and the fine arts — the core subjects of liberal education — are at risk in Canadian universities, and the danger arises largely from the forced reorientation of higher education to assumed market needs. This paper attempts to explain why such policy shifts are occurring; it points to the continuing cultural, social and intellectual value of liberal education; and, drawing from recent and previously unreported census data, it demonstrates that liberal education produces generally positive economic benefits to the individual graduate. It concludes that policies designed to diminish the presence of liberal education in universities in favour of more supposedly "market-worthy" subjects are short-sighted and threatening to the integrity and vitality of higher education. ; Les lettres, les sciences sociales et les arts — les domaines d'étude formant le noyau dur de l'éducation libérale — sont à risque dans les universités canadiennes, et le danger vient principalement de la réorganisation forcée de l'éducation supérieure pour répondre aux demandes du marché. Cet article tente d'expliquer pourquoi ces changements de politique se produisent; il s'intéresse à la valeur culturelle, sociale et intellectuelle de l'éducation libérale; et, s'inspirant des données de récents recensements et d'autres précédemment effectués, il démontre que l'éducation libérale produit généralement des avantages économiques chez ses gradués. Cet article conclut que les politiques servant à diminuer la présence de l'éducation libérale dans les universités à la faveur de programmes soit disant plus valables pour le marché sont à courte vue et menace l'intégrité et la vitalité de l'éducation supérieure.

Cet article utilise les données provenant de l'Enquête longitudinale auprès des immigrants du Canada (ELIC) couvrant la période 2000‐2004 afin d'évaluer l'emploi à durée déterminée et la réussite professionnelle des immigrants récents qui, bien qu'ayant obtenu un diplôme universitaire dans leur pays d'origine, ont choisi de s'inscrire dans un établissement d'enseignement postsecondaire canadien. La principale conclusion de l'article est que la réussite professionnelle des immigrants très instruits est affectée par le choix de l'enseignement post‐secondaire au Canada, toutes catégories socio‐démographiques et conditions d'avant ou après migration confondues. Quatre années après leur arrivée au Canada, les immigrants occupent des emplois nettement moins prestigieux que ceux qu'ils avaient avant la migration. Les immigrants qui ont poursuivi des études universitaires au Canada atteignent des meilleurs résultats professionnels que les non‐participants ou ceux qui ont choisi un collège communautaire. Néanmoins, la majorité des immigrants très instruits n'ont pas réussi à retrouver leur profession.This paper uses data from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada covering the period 2000 to 2004 to assess short‐term employment and occupational attainment of recent immigrants who, despite having completed a university degree in their countries of origin, chose to obtain additional credentials at a Canadian postsecondary institution. The main finding of this paper is that occupational attainment of highly educated immigrants is affected by choice of postsecondary education in Canada regardless of differences in sociodemographic, premigration characteristics, and postmigration conditions. Four years after entry, immigrants worked in jobs with significantly lower occupational prestige than those held prior to migration. Immigrants who pursued a university education in Canada attained highest occupational outcomes when compared to nonparticipants and those who chose a community college pathway. Nevertheless, the majority of highly educated immigrants failed to gain entry to the professions.

This study assesses whether characteristics relating to ethnic identity and social inclusion influence the earnings of recent immigrants in Canada. Past research has revealed that relevant predictors of immigrant earnings include structural and demographic characteristics, educational credentials and employment-related characteristics. However, due to the unavailability of situational and agency variables in existing surveys, past research has generally been unable to account for the impact of such characteristics on the economic integration of immigrants. Drawing on data from Statistics Canada's Ethnic Diversity Survey, this paper builds on previous research by identifying the relative extent to which sociodemographic, educational and ethnic identity characteristics explain earnings differences between immigrants of two recent cohorts and native-born Canadians. The results indicate that immigrants are disadvantaged in the labor market in terms of characteristics relating to sociodemographics and ethnic identity, but are advantaged in terms of human capital.
