Originally published in 1992, this book places Cypriot migration to Britain within the context of New Commonwealth migration as a whole and within developments in the field of racial and ethnic relations. It provides an account of the economic and social position of Cypriots in British society, paying particular attention to a number of central theoretical and political debates relating to class, ethnicity, racism and gender. The book argues that migrant groups have to be understood in terms of the interaction between the internal cultural and social differentiations within the group and the wider structural, institutional and ideological processes of the country of migration. Gender divisions and the family are seen as central in understanding the forms of settlement and the economic and social placement of a migrant group

This article focuses on rethinking the intersectional approach towards a greater framing within the new political economy and particularly concerns itself with the ways such an approach can contribute to theorising various manifestations of gendered violence. The article examines a range of different forms of violence and reflects on how an intersectional framing can inform our understanding better. Sprechen über Herkunft bedeutete im postkolonialen Diskurs der 80er und 90er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts Sprechen über Identität im Sinne von Identitätspolitik. Vor diesem Hintergrund plädiert die Autorin für die Preisgabe des Konzeptes Identität. Stattdessen sollte der Blick auf die "Positionierung" bzw. "Positionalität" gerichtet werden, die allen "Erzählungen über Zugehörigkeit" eigen ist. Die Autorin beabsichtigt damit, die Formen der Geschlechts-, der ethnischen, der Rassen- und Klassenposition theoretisch konsistenter miteinander zu verbinden. Geschlecht, Ethnos (Ethnizität und Rasse) und Klasse können als sich überschneidende und sich gegenseitig beeinflussende soziale Räume gesehen werden, die soziale Prozesse und soziale Beziehungen hervorbringen, die sich unter bestimmten Umständen zu bestimmten Identitäts-Konfigurationen zusammenfügen. Anhand von Interviews mit jungen griechischen Zypriotinnen in England wird zeigt, dass solche Erzählungen eine Vielzahl von sozialen und persönlichen Zielen erfüllen und in ihrem intersubjektiven Kontext gesehen werden müssen, d.h. unter Beachtung der Frage, für wen und zu welchem Zweck sie erzählt werden. In einem bemerkenswerten Maße stützen sie sich auf Vergleiche und sind deshalb relational. Thinking of cultural identities as fluid & symbolic by describing them as hybrid or diasporic is an important step away from modern exclusivist ethnicity with its fixed boundaries & racism. However, concepts of hybridity & diaspora are not endemically antiracist, even though they challenge static & essentialist notions of ethnicity & race. The major problems with location culture as the core of identity & community are discussed; culture & identity, especially in the formation of solidary projects, need to be associated. Shifts in identity need to be viewed within wider structural processes & resource claims. M. Pflum
