In recent years radical right political parties have become a substantial electoral force in many countries around the world. Based on the vision of a mono‐ethnic state, anti‐immigration is these parties' core message. Connecting research on discrimination, social exclusion, and social identity threat, it was assumed that this anti‐immigrant propaganda undermines the intellectual performance of immigrant adolescents. In an experiment conducted at Austrian schools, the intelligence test performance of adolescents with an immigration background decreased after they were exposed to radical right election posters whereas ethnic majority adolescents remained unaffected. The results further suggest that individuals with a strong ethnic minority identity are less vulnerable to the detrimental impact of the radical right propaganda.
; For the authenticity assessment of achiral flavor substances gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (HRGC-IRMS) is an established method. Using authentic reference data, this technique allows the differentiation between a "natural" or synthetic origin. The problem, however, to distinguish biotechnologically produced "natural" flavors from other "natural" ones, e.g. "ex plant" origin, is still unsolved. A suitable approach would be to expand the already existing stable isotope databases using authentic samples. However, this often fails due to the limited availability of authentic biotechnological references or restricted knowledge about the production processes for "natural" flavors. An appropriate alternative is the controlled production of authentic reference flavors according to published biotechnological processes on a laboratory scale. With this strategy additional information about eventual isotopic fractionations can be obtained, which is not only useful for authenticity assessment, but also to extend our basic knowledge about isotopic discriminations in biological systems. The aim of the present study was therefore to elucidate this question regarding selected flavor substances from the groups of the C6-aldehydes and -alcohols ("green notes"), as well as some fermentation alcohols. For this purpose, the biogenetic production of C6-aldehydes and -alcohols from the unsaturated fatty acids linoleic and linolenic acid was realized, and, in parallel, educts, intermediates and products were isolated and analysed as to their delta-2H(V-SMOW)- and delta-13C(V-PDB)-values. In addition, the fermentative production of 2-phenylethanol and 2-methyl-1-propanol was performed by using different sources of carbohydrates. Regarding these fermentation alcohols, the resulting data should also be tested, whether the correlation of the delta-2H(V-SMOW)- and delta-13C(V-PDB)-values enables the authenticity assessment of the flavor substances towards their synthetic or "natural" origin.

Stereotype threat theory suggests that negative stereotypes and devaluing content in the media impair the cognitive and educational achievement of members of the negatively portrayed groups (e.g., Latino Americans, women), whereas nonstereotyped recipients are not affected or even show reversed effects (stereotype lift). A meta-analysis of 33 experiments ( n = 1,831) yielded an overall mean effect size of d = −0.38 (random effects model) in support of the stereotype threat assumption. The results further involve a check on publication bias and moderator analyses with respect to the portrayed group, the dependent variable (academic identification vs. performance), the media format (ads vs. news vs. entertainment), and the world region in which the study was conducted. A second meta-analysis on the stereotype lift hypothesis yielded an overall mean effect size of d = 0.17 ( k = 12, n = 589, nonsignificant, random effects model). Our meta-analytical findings are in support of stereotype threat theory, indicating that negative stereotypes and devaluing content in the media impair members of negatively stereotyped groups, whereas nonmembers are not affected. Implications and open research questions are outlined.

Appels Paperback betrachtet aus (kommunikations-)psychologischer Sicht nun, was z. B.G. (1 S)

Creative artificial intelligence (AI) has received a lot of attention in recent years. Artworks that are introduced to be generated by AI (rather than a human artist) are, however, often evaluated negatively. Integrating extant research, we suggest that AI is ascribed less mind (i.e. agency and experience) which is responsible for this effect. In two experiments ( N = 176 and N = 381) we observed negative indirect effects of artist information (AI vs human artist) on the appreciation of visual artworks. The AI is consistently ascribed less agency and less experience than a human artist. Higher levels of experience and agency ascribed to an artist are, in turn, associated with higher appreciation of a piece of art. In both experiments the total effect of artist information on appreciation was not significant. Artist information did not predict whether the artwork deviated positively from viewers' expectations developed before the actual artwork was encountered.

Audiences are attracted to dramas and horror movies even though negative and ambivalent emotions are likely to be experienced. Research into the seemingly paradoxical enjoyment of this kind of media entertainment has typically focused on gender- and genre-specific needs and viewing motivations. Extending this line of research, the authors focus the role of the need for affect as a more general, gender- and genre-independent predictor of individual differences in the experience of emotions and meta-emotions (i.e., evaluative thoughts and feelings about one's emotions). The article discusses a field study of moviegoers who attended the regular screening of a drama or a horror film. Results support the assumption that individuals high in need for affect experience higher levels of negative and ambivalent emotions and evaluate their emotions more positively on the level of meta-emotions. Controlling for the Big Five personality factors does not alter these effects. The results are discussed within an extended meta-emotion framework.
OBJECTIVE: Global challenges such as climate change or the COVID‐19 pandemic have drawn public attention to conspiracy theories and citizens' non‐compliance to science‐based behavioral guidelines. We focus on individuals' worldviews about how one can and should construct reality (epistemic beliefs) to explain the endorsement of conspiracy theories and behavior during the COVID‐19 pandemic and propose the Dark Factor of Personality (D) as an antecedent of post‐truth epistemic beliefs. METHOD AND RESULTS: This model is tested in four pre‐registered studies. In Study 1 (N = 321), we found first evidence for a positive association between D and post‐truth epistemic beliefs (Faith in Intuition for Facts, Need for Evidence, Truth is Political). In Study 2 (N = 453), we tested the model proper by further showing that post‐truth epistemic beliefs predict the endorsement of COVID‐19 conspiracies and disregarding COVID‐19 behavioral guidelines. Study 3 (N = 923) largely replicated these results at a later stage of the pandemic. Finally, in Study 4 (N = 513), we replicated the results in a German sample, corroborating their cross‐cultural validity. Interactions with political orientation were observed. CONCLUSION: Our research highlights that epistemic beliefs need to be taken into account when addressing major challenges to humankind.
