AbstractClimate change and the challenges associated with the transition to a zero‐carbon economy pose significant financial risks. Climate‐related risks (CRR) indirectly impact banks through their loan portfolios. To examine the integration of CRR into banks' credit risk assessment and monitoring, this article reviews academic and institutional literature using quantitative bibliometric techniques and content analysis of 145 academic documents from policymakers and financial supervisors. A framework emerges that incorporates CRR into credit risk management. We find four thematic areas in the literature: CRR drivers, CRR tools, CRR data and CRR pricing. Overall, uncertainty, non‐linearity, geographic and industrial dependency and non‐reversibility of CRR difficult climate‐related credit risk assessment. Moreover, CRR data present comparability, availability and reliability issues, which Artificial Intelligence can improve. Finally, evidence reveals that current financial prices do not fully reflect CRR. Our findings provide important implications to policymakers for assessing ex‐ante the financial impacts of climate transition regulations, the potential for prudential regulatory action, and the need for supra‐national policies that facilitate access to reliable and comparable climate data.

AbstractEmerging countries present institutional necessities that hinder their sustainable development. In the face of this challenge, companies, and in particular multinational companies (MNCs), can foster sustainable development through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This study focuses on the role of institutional change in transforming CSR into sustainable development in emerging countries. To this end, we propose a view of CSR focused on its institutional determinants and outcomes from a social and developmental perspective. By using quantitative and qualitative data, we analyse the case of three MNCs from different industries based in Europe and operating in Mexico. The case study shows how firms can stimulate institutional change in developing economies and contribute to their sustainable development as measured by the sustainable development goals. Various mechanisms about how this process is made are devised: institutional entrepreneurship, multistakeholder initiatives, interconnection of different institutional dimensions, and subsidiary entrepreneurship. The case study highlights the interaction among MNCs, developing countries, and institutions and how firms' sustainable actions scale up to the macro level.

AbstractDow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) members are considered top sustainable companies within each sector. Thus, DJSI inclusion signals a reputation for strong Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) engagement, which should contribute to enhanced firm performance. This paper examines the performance of the European banks listed in the DJSI for the period 2003–2013 and analyzes the effect of having a reputation for CSR on performance during a period of economic crisis. A vast amount of literature links CSR, reputation and performance, but few studies have examined the banking sector and the impact of the last recession. Our results suggest that banks' efforts to build a reputation for CSR benefits performance. Nevertheless, in periods of crisis, these efforts do not contribute to improved returns. AbstractSince stakeholders cannot directly observe corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, companies attempt to back up their increasing sustainability claims by sending CSR signals. The environment in which signaling takes place influences the credibility of the signals. Among the factors that make up the signaling environment, the overall exposure of the company to different stakeholders (i.e., stakeholder scrutiny) has been neglected by the literature. Using signaling and stakeholder theories, we argue how stakeholder scrutiny shapes CSR signals' credibility. We empirically analyze a sample of 5762 firms across several sectors from 23 developed countries from 2013 to 2017. Stakeholder scrutiny exercises a positive effect on the credibility of CSR signals through a mediated‐moderated impact of CSR (across environmental, social, and governance dimensions) on firm performance.

AbstractWe analyse the implications for international banks of two contemporary megatrends: corporate sustainability (CS) and digitalization. The digital environment and the availability of massive data from customers generate asymmetric information for banks to the detriment of customers, who experience individual vulnerabilities such as privacy rights. This can hinder the positive influence of digitalization in banks' performance, with relevant managerial and political implications. In this context, the reputation generated by CS strategies can constitute a credence factor that reduces customers' fears of opportunistic behavior and information asymmetries. We test and find support for our hypothesis over a panel data of large international banks from developed countries. Our findings shed light on the mutual reinforcement of CS and digitalization strategies in enhancing banks' market performance and efficiency.
