Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben: preußischer Offizier und amerikanischer Freiheitsheld
Steuben (1730-1794), ein Hauptmann Friedrichs des Großen, hatte als Truppenkommandeur der amerikanischen Freiheitsarmee während des Unabhängigkeitskrieges (1775-1783) entscheidenden Anteil an der Erringung der Unabhängigkeit für die englischen Kolonien an der Ostküste Amerikas. Noch heute basiert das Militärreglement der USA in manchen Details auf seinen Lehren und Praktiken. Zu Ehren des in den USA hochverehrten Nationalhelden findet alljährlich in New York die prunkvolle Steubenparade statt. Anhand authentischer Dokumente und Berichte erzählt der Autor (hier zuletzt "Martin Behaim", ID 6/90), Historiker mit besonderem Interesse für deutsch-amerikanische Geschichte (u.a. "Bau deinen Altar auf fremder Erde", 1983, nicht besprochen), ausführlich das Leben Steubens mit Bezug auf seine Abstammung und den jeweiligen zeitgeschichtlichen Hintergrund, wobei im weiteren Verlauf militärhistorische Details dominieren.
