Abstract In 2010, more than 87,000 international students were studying in Malaysia. The Malaysian government wants to increase the number of international students to more than 200,000 by 2020. The case of Malaysia as an emerging player in international education is particularly interesting as it is not only one of the first former colonies of a European country to achieve such high international attractiveness, but also one of the first Muslim-majority countries to become a hub of international education. This article analyses both the supply and demand side of this remarkable trend. The historical and political circumstances for the institutional buildup of Malaysian higher education are discussed, followed by an analysis of the religious, linguistic, and developmental background of the international students coming to Malaysia. Lastly, factors affecting other prominent destinations of international student migration, such as the implications of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, are taken into account.

Die Auseinandersetzung um die asiatischen Werte ist hier ebenso zu nennen wie etwa die um asiatische Wirtschaftskulturen, Menschenrechte und Demokratisierung oder die Stellung der Frau.

Als Anfang der 1970er Jahre die groBflachige Abholzung der indonesischen Regenwälder begann, nahm dies der franzbsische Indonesist Denys Lombard zum AnlaB, uber traditionelle Sehweisen des Waldes in Java, dem politischen und kulturellen Zentrum des Landes, zu forschen (LOMBARD 1974). Ausgehend von literarischen Quellen, stellt er uber einen Zeitraum von mehr als tausend Jahren gewisse Kontinuitaten in der kulturellen Bewertung des Waldes fest.

This article examines how in the discourse on Orientalism, electronic databases from Western academia represent voices from formerly colonized countries. In a case study, the afterlife of one of the classics of Orientalism studies, The Myth of the Lazy Native (1977) by the Malaysian Syed Hussein Alatas, in online databases, particularly JSTOR, is examined. It is found that almost all authors of the included articles are educated in or affiliated with Western academia. This does not automatically result in a rejection of his critical views on Western Orientalism. A close reading reveals that only the early reviews (1977—82) tend to view The Myth of the Lazy Native critically. From 1983 onwards, almost all represented articles refer to the Myth as an authoritative work, with relevance for various fields of study in different periods. However, due to the biased coverage of the online databases, voices from outside the Anglo-American academia remain unheard, which is particularly problematic in the discourse on Western Orientalism.
