New digital technologies for team communication have changed how people work and solve complex problems. Now, millions of people use Online Collaborative Software (OCS) daily, exchanging messages and files in diverse contexts. This article presents a case study of teamwork through the lens of a popular OCS called Slack. Slack was used by a multidisciplinary academic team of designers, social scientists, and engineers working on new biomedical technology. In this work, we investigate whether activity in Slack mirrors social interactions and project progress. We compare team activity in Slack: frequencies of public messages, replies, explicit mentions, membership changes to the 18-month ethnography of the team offline. Our analysis shows team engagement around important project milestones, correlation of meeting attendance, and activity in online public discussions. We visualize the team's multidisciplinary collaboration throughout the project and discuss the limitations of technology to reflect team interactions.

AbstractBuilding on technological advances and existing currents of a healthcare system in flux, the COVID‐19 pandemic has brought about perhaps the most rapid transformation in human health and healthcare seen in our times. Even as new opportunities such as telemedicine, remote care, and rapid precision health practices are poised to improve access and care for populations, the increasing sophistication of this transformation has brought with it new levels of complexity, fragmentation, and silos. The singular outcome of this system is the vast number of novel ways for miscommunication, loss of information in transition, and breakdowns in the cognitive continuity of care. We refer to these failure modes as "dropping the patient" and adopt a mantra of "don't drop the patient" which examines our emerging health system in the context of patient‐centered continuity. In this light, we investigate bright spots and pitfalls, and we offer insights from Human Factors Engineering, Human Centered Design, and Human System Integration, which provide tools and methods to codesign and codevelop continuous and resilient services that are inclusive, sustainable, and effective.

Abstract Background Since Mozambique's independence, the major emphasis of its higher educational institutions has been on didactic education. Because of fiscal and human resource constraints, basic and applied research activities have been relatively modest in scope, and priorities have often been set primarily by external collaborators. These factors have compromised the scope and the relevance of locally conducted research and have limited the impact of Mozambique's universities as major catalysts for national development. Case description We developed a multi-institutional partnership to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the research environment at Mozambique's major public universities to identify factors that have served as barriers to the development of a robust research enterprise. Based on this analysis, we developed a multifaceted plan to reduce the impact of these barriers and to enhance research capacity within Mozambique. Interventions On the basis of our needs assessment, we have implemented a number of major initiatives within participating institutions to facilitate basic and applied research activities. These have included specialized training programmes, a reorganization of the research administration infrastructure, the development of multiple collaborative research projects that have emphasized local research priorities and a substantial investment in bioinformatics. We have established a research support centre that provides grant development and management services to Mozambique's public universities and have developed an independent Institutional Review Board for the review of research involving human research subjects. Multiple research projects involving both communicable and non-communicable diseases have been developed and substantial external research support has been obtained to undertake these projects. A sizable investment in biomedical informatics has enhanced both connectivity and access to digital reference material. Active engagement with relevant entities within the Government of Mozambique has aligned institutional development with national priorities.
