Based on 153 interviews at a mid-sized, commuter university, this article examines the disjuncture between students and alumni on the one hand, and faculty, academic staff and administrators on the other in their perceptions of the challenges facing students who graduate during the Great Recession. Findings reveal a culture of despair in response to economic insecurity for students and graduates: they pursued degrees primarily for a workplace credential, were fearful about the future, and experienced and expressed uncertainty in their post-college plans. While university employees were sympathetic to student problems, only a small number of faculty, staff and administrators viewed student despair as resulting from large-scale structural problems. Instead, the majority of faculty and all of the administrators and academic staff emphasized the need for an individualized response to the social problem of the Great Recession.

The findings reveal support for feminist goals, coupled with ambiguity about the concept of feminism. Although some of the women could be categorised along a continuum of feminist identification, half were 'fence-sitters' or were unable to articulate a position. How is the #MeToo movement reshaping everyday life? In this article and our forthcoming book (Gender Revolution: How Electoral Politics and #MeToo are Reshaping Everyday Life, Routledge), we examine the simultaneous profound transformations, and potent challenges to these changes, that we are witnessing in both the public and private arenas. This gender revolution has led to a culture in which people of all genders increasingly reject abuses of power in interpersonal relationships. Transformations in discourses surrounding sexual consent, harassment and assault, although also vigorously contested, are creating gendered social and cultural change at both the political and personal levels.

The objective of this study is to examine young adults' perceptions of the pandemic. This study is based on a content analysis of memes posted on one of the most popular emerging–adult-focused Facebook groups established during the pandemic. It finds that three themes emerged: pandemic humor, generational identity humor, and generational conflict humor. Memes about the pandemic include sub-themes of a coming apocalypse, adults who deny the seriousness of COVID-19, and a more general expression of negative feelings, particularly anger and fear, through humor. Posts also emphasize the existence of a shared generational identity through humor, with commonly understood references to issues like online learning, productivity, and mental health. Finally, generational conflict humor emphasizes antagonism with older generations, including mistrust of government and political leaders, professors, and universities.

Following a brief overview of the social psychology of social movements, explored are the contributions of social & collective identity to individual & social self-esteem & their impacts on social movement participation. The relationship of high self-esteem to the social consciousness that contributes to joining social movements as a way of furthering social justice is described.
