Standing in the space between fields: The interstitial power of elites in Italian banking foundations
In: The sociological review, Band 70, Heft 6, S. 1284-1301
ISSN: 1467-954X
In this article, I explore interstitiality – a concept based on Gil Eyal's notion of 'spaces between fields' – as a potential heuristic lens for observing contemporary elites, applying it to high-ranking figures in the Compagnia San Paolo (CSP). CSP is a banking foundation ( Fondazione di origine bancaria or FOB) that was set up in the 1990s arising from the privatization of the Italian banking sector. After outlining the theoretical underpinnings of interstitiality, I bring the construct to bear on my own empirical work. First, I elucidate what FOBs are and why they may represent a valuable interstitial observatory on a significant segment of power elite. Second, I examine CSP as an emblematic instance of an FOB. Third, I illustrate the main characteristics of CSP's elites, suggesting that these groups reflect the features of interstitiality insofar as: they merge logics and grammars of justification from different fields; and, given their high degree of mobility across fields, they contribute to disseminating discursive and governmental practices of hybridization. My aim, as advocated for by Mike Savage and Karel Williams, is to enrich the sociological debate on elites by introducing a new conceptual tool.

After having been rather marginal in public and political discourse, elites have returned to being central in the last decade, in particular, and not by chance, after the economic and financial crisis of 2007-2008. In the mainstream trade media debate, there are countless publications about the elites, where mostly hostile tones are used, which are returning on them a characterization that tends to become a commonplace. In the scientific debate, Savage and Williams (2008) had the merit of exhuming the theme, which remains, however, a minority one in the current studies of social sciences on power, where the scene is mainly occupied by the studies on the so-called populism, which, however, not having the elites as a specific object of study, contribute more to their obfuscation than to the understanding of their profile and of their ethos. The aim of my research, in response to the call to arms by Williams and Savage (2008), was to try to develop conceptual and analytical tools with which to study them. Starting from the observation that the theme of how and where to study the elites today is, with some important exceptions, still too little explored by the social sciences.Referring to the Anglo-American pragmatist tradition of Wright Mills (1956), which attributes great importance to the biographies of elites " in flesh and bones" and historically located, I adopted a socio-historical approach and rather than focusing myself on a specific group, a single person, family or resource, I chose to start by identifying a level of analysis from which to observe them, outside the formally responsible arenas for the exercise of power or the ones more mediatized (e.g. Davos), which seemed to be more studied. The choice fell on the great Foundations of banking origin (Fobs), which in today's Italy, seem to be one of the fundamental places where political, economic and financial power thickens and therefore seem to offer a promising object of study for anyone in Italy who wants to identify configurations of power (Elias, ...

Surveys and their use. Problems of logical blindness starting with the Roma case ; I sondaggi e il loro uso.
The publication of surveys on the feeling of hostility towards minorities, and specifically towards "gypsies", raises deep ethical and regulatory issues. The low level of acceptance towards these groups, once measured, may justify naturalised and deterministic views of the exclusion of the most marginal groups. The article explores different strategies for presenting data, which aim to make them more contextualised (comparison in space and time, social composition of those who express a more favourable opinion on social integration policies; views of Roma leaders on stereotypes affecting them). The article concludes with a reflection on the importance of a relational approach which, while capitalising on public opinion research, seeks to limit the logical blindness effects that some survey results may create (.).
