Unter Verwendung des Paradigmas des sozioökonomischen Metabolismus (SEM) und unter Rückgriff auf den Literaturkorpus zu den Treibern anthropogener Umweltstressoren wurden die Perspektiven einer Bioökonomie untersucht. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass eine wirksame Bioökonomiepolitik das Wirtschaftswachstum vom Verbrauch fossiler Ressourcen entkoppeln müsste. Eine groß angelegte Substitution fossiler Ressourcen durch Biomasse könnte zu einer Entkopplung beitragen, würde jedoch von den wirtschaftlichen, technologischen und (geo)politischen Entwicklungen auf den fossilen Märkten abhängen. Außerdem ist die Substitution aufgrund der Endlichkeit von Landressourcen begrenzt, was eine effiziente Nutzung von Biomasse erforderlich macht. Verschiedene Nutzungspfade von Biomasse weisen große Unterschiede hinsichtlich ihres Potenzials auf, zu Entkoppelung und anderen politischen Zielen beizutragen. Die Ergebnisse lassen darauf schließen, dass eine effektive Bioökonomiepolitik einerseits die mit der Nutzung fossiler Ressourcen verbundenen Umweltexternalitäten internalisieren und anderseits hinsichtlich der geförderten Biomassenutzungspfade selektiv sein müsste.Die Arbeit trägt mit den Ergebnissen einer Längsschnittanalyse der Triebkräfte des Konsums von Biomasse und fossilen Ressourcen zur Literatur bei und zeigt die Relevanz von Wettbewerbsaspekten für den SEM auf. Ein Ansatz zur Untersuchung der Auswirkungen industrieller Inputsubstitution wurde adaptiert und durch eine Technik zur Unsicherheitsabschätzung ergänzt. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Methoden und Systemabgrenzung des SEM-Paradigmas gut für die empirische Untersuchung der Zustände und Wirkungen von Bioökonomien geeignet sind. Die Dissertation weist auf einige Herausforderungen hin, z.B. die große Zeitverzögerung zwischen der Veröffentlichung von Input-Output-Daten und der Referenzperiode, die Tendenz von Top-down-Ansätzen zu einem niedrigen Detaillierungsgrad, und Fragen im Zusammenhang mit Homogenitäts- und Linearitätsannahmen. ; Using the paradigm of socioeconomic metabolism (SEM) and drawing on the body of literature on the drivers of anthropogenic environmental stressors, prospects of a bioeconomy were explored. It has been shown that an effective bioeconomy policy would need to decouple economic growth and fossil resource consumption. Largescale substitution of fossil resources for biomass could contribute to decoupling, but this would rely on economic, technological, and (geo)political developments in fossil markets. Besides, substitution is restricted due to finite land resources, which emphasizes the need for the efficient use of biomass. Various utilization paths of biomass exhibit large variation in terms of their potential to contribute to policy objectives. An effective bioeconomy policy is thus likely to internalize environmental externalities associated with the use of fossil resources and to be selective in terms of the biomass utilization paths promoted.The thesis contributes to the body of literature with the findings of a longitudinal analysis of drivers for biomass and fossil raw material consumption and provides support for the relevance of competitiveness issues for SEM. An approach to investigate the effects of industrial input substitution was adapted and supplemented using a technique for uncertainty assessment. It is demonstrated that the methodologies and system delimitation provided by the SEM paradigm are useful for the empirical evaluation of the states and impacts of bioeconomies.
