The author applies a dialogic view of communication to parent‐adolescent relationships, allowing for explicit attention to the process of interaction and social construction of meaning within these relationships. The constitutive role of dialogue between parent and adolescent is set within the context of competing tensions or dialectics. This theoretical framework provides a perspective for attending to parents' and adolescents' experiences and relational interactions, as well as meaning making and identity formation occurring within the dialogic gap.

This article presents a review and critique of current family violence services in North America with a view to understanding how these reflect primarily individualist assumptions linked to dominant social norms. Many minority‐status ethno‐cultural communities in North America share more collectivist traditions. With a particular focus on recently arrived immigrant and refugee Arab families in Canada, we explore the implications of a collectivist orientation for goodness‐of‐fit between available services and family experiences and needs related to family violence. Drawing on collectivist perspectives, with attention to intersectionality and ecosystems, we propose a culturally integrative practice model and provide a case example.

Action research and arts-based activities were used to investigate the experiences of youths, ages 16-20 years, in the Guelph community who identified as being socially marginalized through poverty and/or unstable housing. The focus of the group was on identifying the influences of structural violence in their lives. As part of their discussions, they identified the ways in which their personal safety and well-being, their sense of feeling comfortable and included in the broader community, and their presence and role within this community were influenced by the ways others in their neighbourhoods and social networks treated them. In particular, they described the assumptions and treatment by others that were based on classism and ageism as excluding them and threatening their feelings of safety and well-being when living on the street and/or receiving social assistance. The youth group expressed these ideas through discussion, photovoice, and drawing their version of a 'community map.' This paper includes examples of these participant-produced arts projects to demonstrate their observations and ideas.

In a preliminary investigation of socio-cultural influences on parent-adolescent negotiation of time together and apart, six focus groups were conducted with 58 mothers, fathers, adolescent sons and daughters from Muslim immigrant families residing in a mid-sized urban centre in Ontario, Canada. Focus group participants were asked to describe the time they spend together with and apart from their families, and the degree to which adolescence and immigration contribute to this experience. Qualitative analysis was based on social constructionist principles. One of the primary themes evident in this analysis was related to families' subjective experience of sociocultural differences between countries-of-origin and current Canadian context. An expanded concept of family time that incorporates an element of communal or collective time is supported, suggesting further conceptualization of parental monitoring and family acculturation with corresponding clinical and research directions.
