In electoral sociology, the analysis of vote transfers has traditionally depended on individual data obtained from surveys. Because such data suffer from a significant amount of declaration and memory bias, replacing them with the electoral statistics available down to polling station level may be advantageous. Recent developments in models of ecological inference allow us to use these aggregated data to establish estimates of vote transfers while minimising the risk of ecological error. Nonetheless, the reliability of ecological inference models for estimating vote transfers has thus far received little attention in the form of empirical evaluations. The purpose of the present article is to cast light on this blind spot by analysing a model for predicting electoral volatility in a two-round election, namely the municipal election held in Montpellier in 2014. What makes this approach original is its use of observed information – the proportion of non-voters in both rounds – first to compare this data with the estimates produced by the model and then to integrate it as a modelling parameter to measure its impact on estimated vote allocation. This analysis reveals that the initial model's results are relatively reliable regarding the known parameter, although they slightly overestimate its amplitude and underestimate its variability. The model that integrates information regarding the proportion of consistent non-voters yields estimates close to those obtained using the "raw" model. In terms of interpretative capacity, the value added by integrating this additional information is, therefore, slight. However, integrating the information does make it possible to establish narrower density intervals, reducing the uncertainty associated with the interpretation of the other parameters, particularly proportions associated with candidates who received few votes in the first round.

This study explores how social network sites (SNSs) expose users to cross-cutting views. Relying on cross-national data collected among French and Japanese users of Facebook and Twitter, the design of this study allows assessment of the extent to which active and passive social media use fosters cross-cutting exposure in different national contexts. The results show that SNS use is differently related to cross-cutting exposures depending on forms of usage: while active SNS use is associated with a decrease in cross-cutting exposures, passive use leads to more exposure to dissonant views. This study also acknowledges significant variations across national subsamples, questioning the generalizability of results obtained from single case studies.

Previous works have suggested that social network sites (SNSs) users are exposed to political content incidentally through messages posted by network friends, regardless of their interest in politics. I propose to explore to what extent discussing politics on social media depends on (1) news-seeking attitudes, (2) personal news curation, and (3) users' interest in politics. Using a cross-national sample of French and Japanese SNS users, I test a series of hypotheses with multiple group analysis. The results show that while political discussions on SNSs mainly arise independently from intentional news seeking, political interest determines the chances of discussing politics with network friends. Moreover, discussing politics on SNSs is more dependent on news-seeking attitudes for the Japanese group. These results put into question the generalizability of previous findings regarding social media's role in providing political information for large audiences.

Cet article propose une lecture critique des travaux qui, depuis quelques années en France, revendiquent un retour à l'analyse contextuelle des comportements électoraux, schéma explicatif présenté comme un moyen de renouveler l'analyse des votes. Nous proposons tout d'abord de revenir sur la définition de cette approche essentiellement anglo-saxonne et dont les modèles théoriques n'ont été que très peu interrogés par la science électorale française. Nous resituons dans un second temps le « retour français au contexte » dans ce cadre international et soulignons un paradoxe : ce mouvement n'a jusqu'ici pas été beaucoup plus favorable à l'importation de ces modèles théoriques.

For institutional reasons, the French presidential election is a strangeness in the sphere of Western democracies: because of the election of the head of state by universal suffrage first, then because of the powers it has by more - items that confer crucial importance to the two rounds of voting organized for the occasion. But it is also - and increasingly - an apart in a marked French politics by students of abstention rate. Except for the first round of the 2002, the presidential election is by far the one that mobilizes more French while crystallizing the attentions of professional politicians. As such, the presidential election of 2012 was no exception to the rule. L'analyse des élections présidentielles et législatives en Occitanie met en lumière le tripartisme imparfait qui caractérise désormais le champ partisan français : trois forces dominent outrageusement le panorama électoral, mais en étant chacune travaillée par des tensions internes et l'existence de forces résiduelles, dont celles qui dominaient encore le paysage il y a 10 ans. Dans la première, nous analysons les principaux résultats de ce cycle électoral en Occitanie, et mettons en évidence les contours spatiaux et sociologiques qui le caractérisent. L'usage de la cartographie nous permettra de territorialiser les résultats, en les accompagnant de commentaires fondés sur notre observation continue de la politique en Occitanie. Dans cette perspective, nous documentons un changement qui affecte le vote d'extrême-droite, soit le passage d'un enracinement, en progrès significatif depuis plus de trente ans, à un établissement. Celui-ci résulte d'une intégration dans le système politique, que l'on peut lire dans les attitudes des autres forces politiques à son égard, mais aussi dans celles de leurs électorats, dans le cas d'une élection à deux tours. Dans la seconde partie, nous présentons les résultats d'une analyse des reports de voix entre les deux tours des élections législatives, lesquels concourent, dans les limites que nous indiquerons, à l'établissement du RN comme pôle majeur du tripartisme français.

Le premier tour des élections municipales françaises s'est tenu le 15 mars 2020, alors que l'épidémie de COVID-19 s'installait en France. Quel a été l'impact de la crise sanitaire sur la mobilisation – historiquement faible – lors de ce tour de scrutin? Celle-ci a-t-elle été dépendante de l'intensité de l'épidémie à l'échelle locale? La crise a-t-elle profondément modifié les logiques habituelles de la participation électorale pour ce type de scrutin? Cet article propose de répondre à ces questions au travers d'une analyse longitudinale multiniveau des taux d'abstention enregistrés lors des premiers tours des quatre dernières élections municipales au sein des communes françaises de plus de 3 500 habitants. Nos résultats montrent que les effets de la crise sanitaire en matière de participation sont assez peu dépendants de l'intensité locale de l'épidémie : si la démobilisation augmente partout, et particulièrement au sein des communes traditionnellement plus participatives, nous observons des variations significatives dans les taux d'abstention des communes étudiées uniquement dans les rares départements où l'épidémie a déjà causé les premiers décès. Nous observons également une hausse de l'abstention au sein des communes où les parts de personnes âgées de 65 ans et plus et d'ouvriers sont élevées, particulièrement lorsqu'elles sont situées à faible distance des principaux foyers épidémiques.
