In the context of the larger sustainability discourse, "sufficiency" is beginning to emerge as a new value throughout Western societies, and the question asked in this article is: Can we observe and conceptually identify opportunities to link successful business strategies of incumbents to principles of sufficiency? Thus, how feasible is sustainable entrepreneurship for incumbents? In this paper, a conceptual approach is developed combining insights from sociology, transition research, management and sustainable entrepreneurship research with a focus on narratives as a translation mechanism in situations where tensions emerge between corporate narratives and unexpected societal trends, e.g., the emergence of sufficient lifestyles. It will be shown that even though these are still a niche phenomenon, a focus on corporate narratives is an important element in understanding the role of incumbents in transitions to sustainability.

Städte als Orte der Nachhaltigkeitstransformationen finden immer größere Bedeutung in der Nachhaltigkeits- und Transformationsforschung. Eine der Schlüsselfragen hier ist, wie sich urbane Nachhaltigkeitsnischen proaktiv fördern und verbreiten lassen. Lineare und planbare Pfade zur Vergrößerung dieser sind oftmals nicht umsetzbar, da so die Kompelxität von Transformationsprozessen nicht berücksichtigt wird. Darum fokussiert dieser Beitrag die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen nicht-nachhaltigen und nachhaltigen Strukturen über das Konzept der institutionellen Logiken, das strukturelle Regeln beschreibt und mit Hilfe von Narrativen sichtbar gemacht werden können. Um einen Zugang zu diesen zu bekommen und einen reflexiven Lernprozess anzustoßen wurde ein temporäres Experiment im Reallabor Wuppertal durchgeführt und in einer illustrativen Fallstudie diskutiert. Die gemeinsame Forschungs- und Praxisfrage der Reallaborinteverntion, wie lebenswerter urbaner Freiraum entwickelt werden kann, wurde dahingehend beleuchtet, was die spezifische Qualität des Ortes aus der Perspektive seiner Nutzer*innen ausmacht, welche Narrative hier genutzt werden und welche institutionellen Logiken sich daraus ableiten lassen. Anhand dieser Fallstudie werden methodische Schlüsselmerkmale und das spezifische Verständnis von Experimenten im Kontext von Reallaboren diskutiert. Die Erfahrungen aus dem Reallabor Wuppertal können dabei helfen zu analysieren, ob eine urbane Fläche in einem experimentellen Prozess entwickelt werden kann, welche Spannungen hierbei auftreten können.

AbstractThe article introduces and exemplifies the approach of evidence-based narratives (EBN). The methodology is a product of co-design between policy-making and science, generating robust intelligence for evidence-based policy-making in the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission (DG RTD) under the condition of high uncertainty and fragmented evidence. The EBN transdisciplinary approach tackles practical problems of future-oriented policy-making, in this case in the area of programming for research and innovation addressing the Grand Societal Challenge related to climate change and natural resources. Between 2013 and 2018, the EU-funded RECREATE project developed 20 EBNs in a co-development process between scientists and policy-makers. All EBNs are supported with evidence about the underlying innovation system applying the technological innovation systems (TIS) framework. Each TIS analysis features the innovation, its current state of market diffusion and a description of the innovation investment case. Indicators include potential future market sizes, effects on employment and environmental and social benefits. Based on the innovation and TIS function analyses, the EBNs offer policy recommendations. The article ends with a critical discussion of the EBN approach.
"Transformative science" is a concept that delineates the new role of science for knowledge societies in the age of reflexive modernity. The paper develops the program of a transformative science, which goes beyond observing and analyzing societal transformations, but rather takes an active role in initiating and catalyzing change processes. The aim of transformative science is to achieve a deeper understanding of ongoing transformations and increased societal capacity for reflexivity with regard to these fundamental change processes. The concept of transformative science is grounded in an experimental paradigm, which has implications for (1) research, (2) education and learning, and (3) institutional structures and change in the science system. The article develops the theoretical foundations of the concept of transformative science and spells out the concrete implications in these three dimensions.
Formalised knowledge systems, including universities and research institutes, are important for contemporary societies. They are, however, also arguably failing humanity when their impact is measured against the level of progress being made in stimulating the societal changes needed to address challenges like climate change. In this research we used a novel futures-oriented and participatory approach that asked what future envisioned knowledge systems might need to look like and how we might get there. Findings suggest that envisioned future systems will need to be much more collaborative, open, diverse, egalitarian, and able to work with values and systemic issues. They will also need to go beyond producing knowledge about our world to generating wisdom about how to act within it. To get to envisioned systems we will need to rapidly scale methodological innovations, connect innovators, and creatively accelerate learning about working with intractable challenges. We will also need to create new funding schemes, a global knowledge commons, and challenge deeply held assumptions. To genuinely be a creative force in supporting longevity of human and non-human life on our planet, the shift in knowledge systems will probably need to be at the scale of the enlightenment and speed of the scientific and technological revolution accompanying the second World War. This will require bold and strategic action from governments, scientists, civic society and sustained transformational intent.
