The article shows that since the 1950s all the Syrian regimes have sought to place Syrian army forces in Lebanon not only in order to bring Lebanon under political patronage, but equally in order to block - as the Syrians perceive it - a dangerous breach in the front with Israel. (DÜI-Hns)

A deep, fundamental, and virtually unbridgeable conflict exists between the Palestinian national movement and Syria. Four principal stages are discernible in this conflict in the Lebanese area: (1) 1970-75: emergence of a conflict of interests; (2) 1975-76: slide into violent confrontation; (3) 1977-82: Syria fails to impose its authority; (4) 1982-83: Fath and expulsion of Arafat. This article examines each of these four stages. (DÜI-Hns)
