The Swedish Media Accountability System: A Research Perspective
In: European journal of communication, Band 7, Heft 1, S. 121-139
ISSN: 1460-3705
This article examines the system of media accountability in Sweden: the code of journalistic ethics and good practice, and the apparatus for the examination and judgement of complaints. Results from an extensive research programme in Sweden demonstrate that this system has acquired legitimacy among both journalists and public. The article argues that its legitimacy derives from the way the system evolved, with the support and close involvement of the Swedish media organizations. However, in order to be truly effective, a code of conduct should be relevant to every-day journalistic practice. The article argues that the code should be capable of change and renewal if it is to become an integral part of normal, responsible journalistic practice.
