Objectives To quantify the effect of politics on the physical, psychological, and social health of American adults during the four-year span of the Trump administration. Methods A previously validated politics and health scale was used to compare health markers in nationally representative surveys administered to separate samples in March 2017 (N = 800) and October 2020 (N = 700). Participants in the 2020 survey were re-sampled approximately two weeks after the 2020 election and health markers were compared to their pre-election baselines. Results Large numbers of Americans reported politics takes a significant toll on a range of health markers—everything from stress, loss of sleep, or suicidal thoughts to an inability to stop thinking about politics and making intemperate social media posts. The proportion of Americans reporting these effects stayed stable or slightly increased between the spring of 2017 and the fall of 2020 prior to the presidential election. Deterioration in measures of physical health became detectably worse in the wake of the 2020 election. Those who were young, politically interested, politically engaged, or on the political left were more likely to report negative effects. Conclusions Politics is a pervasive and largely unavoidable source of chronic stress that exacted significant health costs for large numbers of American adults between 2017 and 2020. The 2020 election did little to alleviate those effects and quite likely exacerbated them.

INTELLIGENCE CHANGES RAINED DOWN UPON THE UNITED STATES IN A GREAT TORRENT DURING THE 1940S AND EARLY 1950S, CULMINATING IN THE CREATION OF THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA) IN 1947 AND THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY (NCA) IN 1952. TO FORM A REALISTIC PICTURE OF HOW AND WHY THE OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES (OSS)/CIA AND ITS INTELLIGENCE MODERNIZING COMPANIONS WERE CREATED IN THE PERIOD 1941-52, ONE MUST ACKNOWLEGE THE GREAT CHANGES AND CHALLENGES WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THOSE 11 YEARS. THIS ARTICLE ALSO EXAMINES THE MAIN PHASES OF AMERICAN INTELLIGENCE HISTORY FROM THE CIVIL WAR ERA TO 1942 IN ORDER TO GAUGE WHETHER OR NOT THE CREATIONS OF THE 1940S AND 1950S WERE RADICAL DEPARTURES IN AMERICAN HISTORY OR WERE SIMPLY NEW SUPERSTRUCTURES BUILT ON EARLIER ERAS IN WHICH THE US HAD QUITE EFFECTIVE INTELLIGENCE ORGANIZATIONS.

Outlines the process of industrialisation, the structure of domestic production, manufacturing, exports and imports from 1960 to 1987. AbstractIn response to the requirement of the Thames Water Authority for improved efficiency on all aspects of river management in general, and the New River in particular, commitment was given to look into reducing the overall unit cost and at the same time showing an improvement in effectiveness (levels of service).This paper shows how traditional methods of maintaining a river of this type and magnitude, with due consideration to its environments and physical constraints, can be revolutionized and brought into the 20th century by adopting the latest technology. In addition, and after executing a re‐appraisal of the New River activities, quite radical changes to the existing working practices together with a change in the general attitude of the individual employees were successfully implemented.

The concept of patriotism has fallen on hard times. What was once a value that united Americans has become so politicized by both the left and the right that it threatens to rip apart the social fabric. On the right, patriotism has become synonymous with nationalism and an "us versus them" worldview, while on the left it is seen as an impediment to acknowledging important ethnic, religious, or racial identities and a threat to cosmopolitan globalism. Steven B. Smith reclaims patriotism from these extremist positions and advocates for a patriotism that is broad enough to balance loyalty to country against other loyalties. Describing how it is a matter of both the head and the heart, Smith shows how patriotism can bring the country together around the highest ideals of equality and is a central and ennobling disposition that democratic societies cannot afford to do without.--
