The fear of losing the national essence is central in Cambodia. Argues that the cult of the Angkor allowed France to give Cambodian nationalism an ideological form which oppressed the people it claimed to represent. The Khmer Rouge, fed and armed by Peking, Washington, Bangkok and the UN, now seek to capture the temples of Angkor and make it their capital. (SJK)
