The Handbook of Advances in Trust Research presents new and important developments in trust research. The contributors are all prominent and highly respected experts in the field. Firstly, they provide a contemporary overview of the most crucial issues in current trust research including contracts, innovation and negotiation, trust and control. Thereafter, themes which have gained prominence since the original Handbook are considered, such as trust and the financial crisis, public trust in business, and trust and HRM. The book also explores recent theoretical advances and points the way for future research on trust.

Many transition economies are characterised by a relatively rudimentary institutional framework. Weak legislative structures and the absence of effective market regulation and property right enforcement rules often prohibit mutually profitable business transactions and - more generally - restrict the chances for innovation and sustainable growth. Against this background, we analyse the extent to which more efficient governance mechanisms can contribute to a more favourable business environment. In doing so, we adopt a network perspective. We argue that both in developed market economies as well as in centrally planned economies much of economic exchange takes place in networks. However, the characteristics of these networks, in particular the concept of trust, can differ significantly. This implies that the real challenge of the process of economic transition is connected to building new economic exchange networks. In this paper, we discuss this argument and analyse how the current enlargement of the E.U. into Eastern Europe may favourably affect this process of institutional change in the accession countries.

This paper gives an overview of major issues in trust research, identifying common foundations and multiple constellations of organizational trust. In doing so, the paper also addresses important implications of theory development and empirical research. First, it provides a historical sketch of different approaches to understanding the phenomenon of trust, drawing upon various social science disciplines. Second, it discusses different levels of analysing trust in organizational settings. Third, it deals with important issues of operationalisation and measurement of organizational trust. Finally, it briefly summarises the contents of the five papers that follow this introductory paper in the special issue of JMP on "The micro‐foundations of organizational trust".

This article revisits the concept of responsible autonomy, analysing the interplay of employee autonomy, management control and trust experienced by knowledge professionals in the UK compelled to work remotely during the coronavirus pandemic. The authors theorise about the tensions and paradoxes of responsible autonomy in the contemporary context of the COVID-19 crisis, drawing on empirical findings gathered in May 2020 and May 2021. Many participants experienced increased autonomy and discretion, but also work intensification and blurred work–life boundaries. Interestingly, many accepted this paradox as a palatable trade-off for the autonomy of being able to work from home, particularly where there was reciprocal trust between employee and manager. Trust is the glue in responsible autonomy, yet exists in tension with intrusive managerial control.
