International audience ; In self-employed activities, the division of domestic and professional tasks between partners is usually studied in occupations with a certain degree of conservatism, or in which women's careers are actually an adaptation to their couple's project. This article reflects on gender relations within the occupational group of art ceramicists, which offers quite a different situation: not only is it strongly feminized, but it is also organized according to principles intended to be egalitarian. Besides, its members are endowed with cultivated dispositions, claim a left-wing political culture, and choose ceramics out of a desire of self-fulfillment. How, then, can we explain the limited effects of feminist achievements in the lifestyles and work of these self-employed workers? After drawing the demographic contours of this occupation and its culture, the article outlines the inequalities that exist within households, where either one or both spouses practise(s) ceramics. We then show how material and symbolic dimensions generate diverse forms of invisibility of women's work, both within the domestic unit and the professional sphere. Après avoir dessiné les contours démographiques du métier et de sa culture professionnelle, le texte expose les inégalités qui se déploient au sein des foyers où la céramique d'art est exercée par l'un des conjoints, ou les deux. Nous montrons comment des enjeux matériels et symboliques produisent diverses formes d'invisibilisation du travail de la femme céramiste, au sein de l'unité domestique comme de la sphère professionnelle. Enfin, nous proposons des analyses explicatives de ces inégalités de genre, a priori paradoxales dans un espace social vécu comme une alternative à d'autres formes de domination.

International audience ; This article considers a specific sub-type of non-standard employment—self-employment—through a particular type of cooperative in France: the Business and Employment Cooperatives (BEC), i.e., collectives of freelance workers. BECs aim to provide an indefinite employment contract—and the social protection associated with it—to these individuals who therefore become "salaried entrepreneurs." To better understand the gray zones of work, where legal status, practices and identities are often disconnected, this inquiry is based on a qualitative approach to social actors' practices. It shows, on a meso level, how BECs "hijack" the standard wage-labor contract on the grounds that this is emancipatory and therefore drag it into a non-standard form of employment. In addition with this first shift between the legal framework and its interpretation, a second shift occurs as each member of the cooperative—a "false wage earner"—develops a singular relationship to the constraints related to such a contract. Through the notion of "praxis," combining both objective and subjective dimensions of work, we are able to systematize the analysis of qualitative data and identify the factors that influence such a diversity of appropriations: the relationship to conflictuality and political competence. Finally, this article highlights the conditions under which social actors make a wide range of appropriations of common legal frameworks, whose flexibility requires us to consider employment relationships as variant and creative practices rather than as "perfect" or "deviant" forms.

Ceramic artists emerged as a professional group in France in the second half of the 20th century by shunning industrial standards and basing their practice on the notion of singularity. They also reappropriated the craft legacy of the small pottery companies that began disappearing in the 1940s, embracing principles such as seriality and functionality, and defining a specific bundle of tasks. Ceramicists underwent a partial artification process, rendering their practice discordant with what institutionally and legally constitutes art, as well as diverging from the standard definition of craft. Certain art ceramicists contest the cultural ranking that policymakers apply which excludes art-crafts from the purview of art. To claim recognition for the composite nature of their practice, they seek recourse to the courts to create new legal norms. They also strive to expand the definition of art. The article demonstrates how shifts in the balance of power both inside a professional group and between the group and government agencies can influence institutional definitions of art.

International audience ; « Terres de solidarité » (TdS), un dispositif de solidarité, a été fondé en 2000 en France au sein d'un groupe professionnel de créateurs indépendants : les céramistes d'art, qui exercent sous divers statuts (artiste, artisan, profession libérale, auto-entrepreneur…). Ce dispositif associatif repose sur l'auto-organisation associative et syndicale, puisqu'il est co-géré par le Collectif National des Céramistes (CNC), une union d'association de professionnels, et par la chambre syndicale des Ateliers d'Art de France (AAF). Sans se substituer aux systèmes d'indemnisation généraux, ce dispositif matérialise une action complémentaire aux régimes généraux existant, destinée à venir en aide aux individus dont les conditions de vie et d'exercice sont compromises, y compris lorsque les raisons en sont extra-professionnelles (décès du conjoint, incendie du domicile…). En 2016, et suite à divers problèmes survenus dans le dispositif en 2015, AAF et des démissionnaires issus du CNC entendent s'inspirer de TdS pour réactiver un Fonds de solidarité déjà existant dans AAF, en étendant à la fois ses missions (aide financières, mais aussi juridique, psychologique…), et son périmètre d'action à l'ensemble des professionnels du secteur des métiers d'art en France. Il s'agit donc d'une extension massive du dispositif. D'un côté, cette entreprise s'accompagne d'appels au politique (au niveau législatif), avec la revendication de la création d'un statut unique d'artisan d'art et des droits sociaux et fiscaux associés, qui mettrait fin à l'éclatement des statuts de travailleur indépendant dans ce secteur. De l'autre, la mise en place de cette couverture individuelle gérée par un organe professionnel et non-étatique pourraitaccompagner aussi les évolutions de l'Etat social et la tendance à l'individualisation de la couverture des risques. Or, certains céramistes défendent le caractère artistique de certaines pratiques jugées artisanales, et critiquent la hiérarchie culturelle excluant l'artisanat d'art des politiques publiques artistiques. En contestant (y compris par le recours au droit) le périmètre de l'art, ils font de l'artification inachevée de leur métier une revendication. L'article montre comment les (re)définitions de ce qu'est l'art émanent du rapport de force entre les logiques d'artification portées au sein de ce groupe professionnel, et les cadres proposés par la puissance publique.
