Programs established to increase Japan's knowledge of Canada & Japanese views of Canadians vs Americans are explored, updating John Saywell's (1986) survey of Japanese university students' attitudes toward Canada. Data from 520 Japanese students & adults in the Tokyo & Tsukuba areas reveal scores of 79% on US knowledge & 34% on Canadian knowledge. They equated Canada with nature, the environment, & beauty, & with more safety than in the US. In a second study, 50 students at Tsukuba U described Americans with positive & negative attributes & Canadians with mostly positive adjectives. It is concluded that about 33% of the respondents did not differentiate between Americans & Canadians & held erroneous stereotypes about North Americans. 11 Figures. M. Pflum
