AbstractThe present study analyses the problem of working time with respect to gender equality. It examines the possibility of a different working time politics, which should take women's reproductive work into account. Three aspects are discussed within this framework. Time in general, as well as working time in particular are elaborated in conjunction with value and economic shifts. Time with its structures and components are shown in a gender‐specific perspective, that is, in terms of the roles and needs of women. Finally, suggestions toward a more women‐sensitive, global politics on working time are proposed.

In introducing the six contributions to an examination of women in elective politics in four Francophone countries (France, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland) sees the writers place emphasis on common elements, frameworks, & quality of participants. Other factors are acknowledged but not highlighted. Maintains that consideration of such factors would be needed to provide nuances to the contentions & arguments in the essays at hand. Introduction acknowledges recent history (i.e., post World War II) by noting the growing number of women elected officials while pointing out their underrepresentation given the number of women. Further examines the three principle elements typical of the electoral structures of the countries under examination. Deals with such basic elements as the party system, term limits,& issues of proportional representation in two of the countries. In addition, discusses empirical studies that maintain a connection between district or constituency, a candidate's rank, & the election of women. Deplores the fact that these topics are not more extensively studied. Additional issues raised include the concept of quotas as a modification of the standard political rules of the game, noting that both France & Belgium have instituted quotas.
