Seit Herbst 2022 beklagen Kläranlagenbetreiber verstärkt Lieferengpässe bei Chemikalien, die insbesondere als Fällmitttel für die chemische Phosphorelimination benötigt werden. Ein neues Fachgutachten beschreibt die aktuelle Situation und Lösungsoptionen.

Die Energie- und Lieferkrise resultierend aus dem Krieg in der Ukraine haben besonders die Abwasserentsorger in große Schwierigkeiten gebracht. Vor allem die Produktions- und Lieferprobleme bei der Fällmittel-Herstellung, aber auch bei weiteren Zusatzstoffen wie Flockungsmitteln oder Kohlenstoff (C)-Quellen etc. haben gezeigt, dass die heutige Klärtechnik nicht krisenfest aufgestellt ist und resilienter werden muss. Besonders betroffen ist die Bereitstellung von Fällmitteln für die Phosphorelimination, aber auch in der Trinkwasseraufbereitung. Ziel dieses Forschungsberichts ist es, die benötigte Fällmittelmenge für Deutschland hinsichtlich chemischer Phosphorelimination zu ermitteln, sowie die voraussichtlichen Fehlmengen aufgrund der Mangellage zu berechnen. Weiterhin werden Lösungsmöglichkeiten identifiziert, wie Fällmittel eingespart oder substituiert werden kann (Arbeitspaket 1). Es werden Hilfestellungen für die Praxis und Modifikationen des Betriebsablaufes formuliert (Arbeitspaket 2), und wie sich der verfahrenstechnische Einfluss von regulatorischen Änderungen auf den Betrieb auswirkt (Arbeitspaket 3). Zur Datenermittlung einer sinnvollen Beantwortung der Fragestellung wurden geeignete Umfragen bei Betreibern, Herstellern und Behörden durchgeführt (Arbeitspaket 4). Es wird eine Empfehlung gegeben wie ein Weg zur resilienteren Abwasserwirtschaft mit Fokus auf die Phosphorelimination aussehen kann. Der Fokus des Gutachtens liegt hierbei auf den abwassertechnischen Fragen. Die Situation in der Industrie (Direkt- und Indirekteinleiter) sowie im Trinkwasserbereich wird aber mitbetrachtet.

In mehr als 1.000 Kompostierungs- und Vergärungsanlagen werden in Deutschland getrennt gesammelte Bioabfälle behandelt, um die entstehenden Erzeugnisse (Komposte und Gärreste) anschließend als ­Dünger und Humuslieferant verwerten zu können. Der ­größte Anteil sind getrennt gesammelte ­Küchen- und Gartenabfälle aus privaten Haushalten, aber auch aus der Park- und Landschaftspflege der Städte und Gemeinden. Ebenso gehören zu den Bioabfällen tierische und pflanzliche Abfälle aus der Lebens­mittel erzeugenden und verarbeitenden Industrie sowie gewerbliche Bioabfälle wie abgelaufene Lebensmittel aus dem Handel und Speiseabfälle aus Restaurants und Kantinen.

Plastics are important materials, and the demand for and the consumption of plastic has been increasing for years. When plastics enter the environment, they can cause great damage to both ecosystems and living organisms. Meanwhile, plastics is found in oceans, rivers, lakes, and soil. One of the mains causes worldwide is the lack of insufficient waste and wastewater management but there are many other sources like tyre abrasion, films from agriculture, or plastic particles from cosmetics or cleaning materials. In addition, more and more plastic material enters the environment through littering. This paper shows – with regard to Germany - where we stand, what we need to do, what the research needs are, and which measures we can already implement in order to tackle the problem.

Kunststoffe sind wichtige Werkstoffe, und der Bedarf und Verbrauch steigen seit Jahren stark an. Gelangen die Kunststoffe in die Umwelt, können sie Ökosysteme und Lebewesen massiv beeinträchtigen. Inzwischen finden sie sich in Meeren, Flüssen, Seen und Böden. Eine Hauptursache weltweit ist ein unzureichendes Abfall- und Abwassermanagement, aber es gibt noch viele weitere Quellen wie Reifenabrieb, in der Landwirtschaft eingesetzte Folien oder Plastikpartikel in Kosmetika und Reinigungsmitteln. Auch durch Littering landet immer mehr Plastik in der Umwelt. Dieses Papier zeigt - bezogen auf Deutschland - , wo wir stehen, was wir tun müssen, welcher Forschungsbedarf besteht und welche Maßnahmen wir jetzt schon umsetzen können, um das Problem in den Griff zu bekommen.

With this strategic research agenda, UBA identifies future research priorities for the development of urban areas which are based on environmental quality goals. Interfaces between disciplines and knowledge gaps in environmentally-oriented, socially responsible and health-promoting urban development are identified.

This scientific opinion paper discusses the key topics of the European Commission's Proposal for a Recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. It shows how the proposed changes could affect wastewater treatment in Germany and highlights further refinement needs. In general, the proposal of the revised UWWTD is endorsed. The clear shift from basic wastewater collection and treatment to efficient wastewater management will have a positive influence on various environmental targets. It will also reduce the impact of wastewater treatment on the receiving water bodies as well as the impact of climate change on both, our cities, and the environment.

AbstractThis study reflects typical consumer textile washing behaviour while taking into account existing standards in the household appliance and garment industries. Two garments were washed repeatedly with artificial dirt and detergent 30 times. The collected washing water was separated using fractional filtration. Textile physical tests were used to follow property changes of the garments, the microplastic release is determined using thermoextraction/desorbtion–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and the total organic carbon was measured as a sum parameter for the organic bonded carbon. This article shows the importance of a reality‐based approach when investigating microplastics of textile origin in the laundry care process. Deposits of detergent and dirt on the textiles were detected. The total mass of sieve residues was much higher than the release of synthetic polymers. The cotton content of the garments causes a much higher fibre release than synthetic fibres. Both will lead to false results by purely gravimetric analysis because nonpolymer fibres will be included microplastic mass. The results cannot be generalised only by the main polymer type, knowledge of the textile construction must be included for final evaluation.

AbstractIn recent years, thermoextraction/desorption‐gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TED‐GC/MS) has been developed as a rapid detection method for the determination of microplastics (MP) mass contents in numerous environmentally relevant matrices and, in particular, for the measurement of polymers in water samples without time‐consuming sample preparation. The TED‐GC/MS method was applied to investigate a typical European municipal wastewater system for possible MP masses. Such investigations are important in view of the recent revision of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. Four different representative sampling sites were selected: greywater (domestic wastewater without toilet), combined sewer, and influent and effluent of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). All samples were collected by fractional filtration. Filtration was carried out over mesh sizes of 500, 100, 50, and in some cases, 5 µm. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) were detected in all samples, with the PE fraction dominating in all cases. Styrene‐butadiene rubber which serves as an indication of tire abrasion, was only found in the influent of the WWTP. The highest MP mass contents were found in the combined sewer, so MP can become a source of pollution during heavy rain events when the capacity limits of the effluent are reached, and the polluted effluent is released uncontrolled into the environment. Based on the studies, MP retention from the WWTP could be estimated to be approximately 96%. Few trends in polymer type or mass contents were detected within the different fractions of the samples or when comparing samples to each other.

The European Green Deal, published as one major work stream of the new European Commission at the end of 2019, represents a new and ambitious approach to put environment and sustainability more at the heart of European policy. The announcements there must now be brought to life through various strategies and implementation measures. This study analyses the European Green Deal from the perspective of the German Environment Agency and places it in the context of the global challenge of achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals. To this end, the individual thematic areas of the European Green Deal and their measures are analysed and we discuss what further measures may be necessary to achieve the self-imposed EU goals, but also the United Nations goals and other long-term goals such as the Paris Climate Agreement. In addition to necessary measures in the fields of human well-being, sustainable economic activity, sustainable food systems, climate and energy, urban development and digitalization, the paper also clearly states that structural adjustments are needed as key levers to achieve the desired goals. New approaches are needed in the governance of sustainability policy, in the economic and financial sector, in civil society involvement, and in science and innovation. The study concludes that the European Green Deal is an important step forward, but that further efforts beyond those described there are still needed in order to achieve a sustainable Europe.
