The author, a former colonel with twenty-two years of service in the Israeli Defence Forces, is a leading member of the peace movement in Israel. He concludes that the intifadah has managed to disrupt dramatically all of the customary Israeli political and ideological patterns that have evolved since 1967. It has shattered irreversibly the common Israeli belief that the occupation can be maintained without too high costs. (DÜI-Hns)
