Short description:The Bakairí are one of Brazil's indigenous groups which speak the Karib language. Major changes occurred in their lives in the last century and only their social flexibility and political adaptability allowed them to survive in a culturally, socially and economically hostile environment. This article dedicates special attention to the ways in which they manage to keep their own socio-cultural hierarchy and history and continue to exist among other peoples, while maintaining their distinct ethnicity.
