Colonial Monuments, Portuguese Commemorations and the Writing of the History of the Colony of Cabo Verde
In: Contemporary European history, Band 33, Heft 2, S. 705-724
ISSN: 1469-2171
Taking as a case study the commemorations and the monuments erected in the colony of Cabo Verde to memorialise the Portuguese 'discoverers' of the fifteenth century, this article scrutinises how those mnemonic schemes acted in the construction of the public memory of the 'discovery' of the Cabo Verde islands. It analyses the management of those schemes in the fixation of the narrative established as official history of 'discovery', in a context featured by controversies, uncertainties, omissions and historical lack about that very 'discovery'. It also critically examines the contradictions, the concoction of facts and the distortions created by the promoters of the commemorations and monuments, as well as the role they played in that process. This article proves how, through the commemorations held and the monuments erected, the promoters of colonial memory distorted the protocols of interpretation of the information on the 'discovery' of Cabo Verde present in the Portuguese official documents and how they shaped the global understanding of that fact.
Cabo Verde e o Espaço Euro-Atlântico da Macaronésia
In: Debater a Europa, Heft 23, S. 91-106
ISSN: 1647-6336
The French Anticolonial Solidarity Movement and the Liberation of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde
UID/HIS/04209/2019 PTDC/EPH-HIS/6964/2014 ; The liberation wars in the Portuguese colonies were not merely local processes, circumscribed to the geographical areas where armed combat was taking place. This article sheds light on this phenomenon by examining the ways in which the PAIGC's struggle, combined with Amilcar Cabral's political performance, influenced the activism of anticolonialist committees in France, particularly in Paris. After mapping out the committees' actions and discourses concerning the PAIGC–as well as their broader critique of Portuguese colonialism and authoritarianism–the article analyses a set of cultural artefacts (books, plays, etc) produced by these groups which helped disseminate the Guinean war at an international level. It also discusses the articulation between the committees' demands and their positions vis-à-vis the politics of France and Portugal, as well as their wider denunciation of western imperialism and the Cold War system. The aim is to assess the interplay between domestic and internationalist agendas, demonstrating how, on the one hand, the French committees' rhetoric and actions were influenced by the liberation movements and, on the other hand, the support for the African struggle served a purpose in their political strategy at home. ; authorsversion ; published

Amílcar Cabral and the Liberation of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde ; International, Transnational, and Global Dimensions
UID/HIS/04209/2019 IF/01579/2015 PTDC/EPH-HIS/6964/2014 ; This themed section explores various international and transnational dimensions of the struggle for the decolonisation of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde in the 1960s and early 1970s. Its articles analyse how the path to independence of these relatively small West African nations tied into a wide array of interconnected historical processes taking place around the world, from the streets of Paris to the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing. The aim is to shed new light on the circulation of ideas and foreign connections involved in this struggle, especially those of Amílcar Cabral (1924–73), founding leader of the liberation movement PAIGC and widely regarded as a key thinker of African emancipation, alongside Frantz Fanon and Kwame Nkrumah. In particular, this collection of articles examines how the struggle both shaped and was shaped by larger and/or distant trends, including Third World solidarity networks, the spread of the Cold War to Africa, and the impact of tiers-mondisme in the northern world. It thus contributes to assess the impact of African politics beyond the African continent, as well as to highlight the role of the international community in African liberation and in the emergence of postcolonial states. ; authorsversion ; published

Introduction. Amílcar Cabral and the Idea of Anticolonial Revolution
In: Lusotopie: enjeux contemporains dans les espaces lusophones, Band 19, Heft 1, S. 9-35
ISSN: 1768-3084
Abstract
This article intends to be a contribution to the present issue, entirely dedicated to Amílcar Cabral and the Idea of the Anticolonial Revolution. The main goal is to shift and decentralize the emphasis so far exclusively laid upon the historical weight of Cabral as an individual. In other words, we propose a more inclusive analysis and an approach that does not overlook the multiplicity of interactions and connexions, as well as how several interconnected elements hardly related to the figure of Cabral fostered the process of the liberation struggle of Guinea and Cabo Verde and brought it into fruition. In this introductory considerations we will address three main topics. First, we address Amílcar Cabral and PAIGC's liberation project of struggle in relation with the domestic and transnational wave of decolonization from the same period. Secondly, we briefly outline the different topics so far discussed in the academic and non-academic works related to the history of liberation of Guinea and Cabo Verde, as well as how certain perspectives influenced the understanding of this history. Finally, we highlight the pertinence of the topic of this volume and identify the contribution of each of the different case studies presented in the articles.
