The transformation of a graphic display into tangible form for blind persons is usually achieved by raising the entire image above the surface. In the case of tangible line graphs, this format causes readability problems by degrading figure-ground (data-curve/grid) differentiation. This study assessed the feasibility of a new design format involving both raised and incised elements in the same display. The results from 24 blind students in grades 4 through 7 indicated that an incised-grid/raised-data-curve format significantly improves graph-reading performance relative to a raised-grid/raised-data-curve format. The importance of designing displays in ways that are compatible with the perceptual-motor capabilities of blind persons is discussed.

Tactile graphic displays represent an important medium for communicating information to the blind. Because the need for such displays often cannot be met by standard mass production methods, practitioners have had to fabricate them on an individual basis. This article describes the development, evaluation, and testing of a kit which includes tools and information for facilitating the construction of readable tactile graphic displays.

The contribution of preview to the performance of open tasks is pointed out, and sensory anticipation and perceptual anticipation are discussed as components of preview. A case is then made for regarding the blind pedestrian's task as a typical example of an open task. Next, there is a review of research in which the contribution of preview to the performance of open tasks has been observed under controlled conditions. Preview has not been the variable of primary interest in the studies of the performance of blind pedestrians reported so far. However, some experiments have provided indications of the importance of preview, and these experiments are reviewed. The article concludes by urging the necessity of understanding preview, so that its contribution to the performance of blind pedestrians can be taken into account in the formulation of mobility training programs and the design of mobility aids.

We advocate for a major evolution in the way we collaborate, calling for transformative scientific, cultural, behavioral, and management changes. This is timely because we now have the scientific and technical capabilities as well as urgent societal and political drivers.
