By adapting their properties to the respective situation, active machine components can contribute to improving process conditions or increasing the service life of the system components involved. This article presents the design of a profile rail guide that can switch between different preload classes by means of integrated piezo actuators and thus minimise its own wear.
Deliberative processes can alter participants' attitudes and behavior, but deliberative minipublics connected to macro-level discourse may also influence the attitudes of non-participants. We theorize that changes in political efficacy occur when non-participants become aware of a minipublic and utilize its deliberative outputs in their decision making during an election. Statewide survey data on the 2010 and 2012 Oregon Citizens' Initiative Reviews tested the link between awareness and use of the Citizens' Initiative Review Statements and statewide changes in internal and external political efficacy. Results from a longitudinal 2010 panel survey show that awareness of the Citizens' Initiative Reviews increases respondents' external efficacy, whereas use of the Citizens' Initiative Review Statements on ballot measures increases respondents' internal efficacy. A cross-sectional 2012 survey found the same associations. Moreover, the 2010 survey showed that greater exposure to—and confidence in—deliberative outputs was associated with higher levels of both internal and external efficacy.
"This chapter provides an overview of research on the relevance of entertaining and emotional aspects of political media coverage. Based on a discussion of the normative preference for information apparent in most work on political communication, the authors reflect on how and why emotional and entertaining message components nevertheless matter. They argue that investigating the political relevance of those elements has become important because of the rise of new formats of political information and changes of traditional news (e.g., late-night talks, tabloidization, softening of news). More specifically, the chapter reviews the state of the art in research on the presence and effects of humor, visuals, negativity, and fear in political coverage. The authors conclude that the effects of those elements may not necessarily be entertaining. Rather, politically significant repercussions on political knowledge, attitudes, and participation can result from such ostensibly nonpolitical content." (publisher's description)
