Dissemination of research results should be an objective for both the aid agency sponsoring research & for the researcher who undertakes policy-oriented research. The researcher should be interested in ensuring that his results, or policy recommendations will be understood & used in the developing country. 3 different methods of dissemination can be distinguished: (1) passive activities, (2) active activities, & (3) formal collborative activities. Efficiency is defined as the availability of research results, in a usable form, for use as an input into the decision-making process. Aid agencies have developed 3 different procedures for sponsoring development research: the active model, the reactive model, & the middle approach. All research results are not intended to be disseminated. Examining the relation between the research manager & the researcher may illustrate some of the communication & perceptual gaps existing between the 2 parties, such as their "looking" at the research problem differently. Understanding the nature of the gaps between the manager & the researcher should facilitate the choice of dissemination methods to bridge their differences & to enable the research results to be transferred, in an employable form, to the policy-maker. A crucial problem in dissemination method & the dissemination process is the absence of guidelines. R. Lent.
