The present paper investigates a standard model of endogenous fertility when child survival to adulthood is uncertain. In this framework, I first show that facing the risk their children die before reaching adulthood, parents don't always formulate a precautionary demand for children. Indeed, there exists a non-empty set of utility functions for which parents undershoot their number of children rather than overshooting it. Second, the properties of the optimal economic policy will crucially depend on the manner the Social Welfare Function takes uncertainty into account. More precisely, if Social Welfare is evaluated after the resolution of uncertainty, the parental response to uncertainty is a source of social inefficiency. Then, individual decisions have to be corrected through tax or transfer on both births and education. This property becomes crucial to determine the optimal public response to a mortality crisis in presence of positive externalities on education.

My thesis provides a contribution to economists' continuous attempts at understanding the determinants of population growth and their implications for human well-being. It particularly focuses on fertility behaviors which are the main determinant of population growth. The first chapter of the present thesis explores the economic policy recommendations of the standard Beckerian model. I show that, in order to reach the first best equilibrium, education subsidies have to be combined with taxes or transfers on births. The optimal family policy consists in a tax on births when externalities on education investments are strong. The second chapter proposes a model in which the apparition and the timing of the demographic transition are determined by interactions between cultural and economic determinants of fertility behaviors. The demographic transition is then the result of both an asymmetric technological progress in favor of industries and a cultural transition. The third chapter measures the impact of religion and religious practice on fertility behaviors for the first time in France. I show that the intensity of religious practice is the sole religious variable which significantly influences fertility: the more intense the religious practice is, the higher the respondent's fertility. The transmission of fertility behaviors and family ties among generations are also significant determinants of fertility in France. Elle se concentre particulièrement sur les comportements de fécondité, déterminant majeur de la croissance démographique. Le premier chapitre de cette thèse explore les recommandations de politique économique du modèle Beckerien standard. Il est démontré que, dans ce cadre, toute politique de subvention à l'éducation doit être complétée par une politique familiale. Cette politique consiste à taxer les naissances lorsque les externalités liées à l'investissement éducatif sont fortes. Le second chapitre propose un modèle où l'apparition et le timing de la transition démographique dépendent de l'interaction entre déterminants économiques et culturels des comportements de fécondité. La transition démographique est alors le fruit d'un progrès technique asymétrique en faveur du secteur industriel et d'une transition culturelle. Le troisième chapitre propose de mesurer l'impact de l'appartenance et de la pratique religieuse sur les comportements de fécondité en France. Cet exercice est le premier du genre en France et il conclut que l'intensité de la pratique religieuse est la seule variable religieuse qui influence significativement la fécondité : plus un individu est pratiquant et plus sa fécondité est élevée. Il apparaît que la transmission des comportements de fécondité et des valeurs familiales entre générations sont également des déterminants significatifs de la fécondité en France. Les effets Beckeriens standards sont également validés.

L'Inde est un pays en développement où les femmes se sont engagées sur le long chemin de l'émancipation tant au niveau de la famille que de la société. Dans ce contexte, l'infécondité pourrait être perçue comme un signe majeur d'émancipation à l'égard du mariage et de la maternité. En utilisant des régressions à l'échelle individuelle, cet article montre que le rapport entre la probabilité d'une femme de terminer sa vie reproductive sans avoir eu d'enfant et son niveau d'études suit une courbe en U. La pauvreté et la stérilité ne sont donc pas les seuls déterminants de l'infécondité : l'amélioration des perspectives économiques et l'autonomisation au sein du couple comptent également. Ce résultat se maintient après l'introduction de variables de contrôle importantes comme le niveau de développement de l'État où réside la femme, le niveau d'études du mari, l'âge au mariage, la religion et la caste. L'Inde semble rejoindre la liste des pays où les ajustements vis-à-vis de l'infécondité vont bien au-delà d'une simple réaction à l'augmentation ou la diminution de la pauvreté.

We develop a theory of fertility, distinguishing its intensive margin from its extensive margin. The deep parameters are identified using facts from the 1990 US Census: (i) fertility of mothers decreases with education; (ii) childlessness exhibits a U-shaped relationship with education; (iii) the relationship between marriage rates and education is hump-shaped for women and increasing for men. We estimate that 2.5 percent of women were childless because of poverty and 8.1 percent because of high opportunity cost of childrearing. Over time, historical trends in total factor productivity and in education led to a U-shaped response in childlessness rates while fertility of mothers decreased. (JEL I20, J13, J16, N31, N32)
