In recent years, there has been increased interest in testing the thesis that global city emergence is accompanied by increases in social polarisation. Given the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in the global economy, this paper makes a timely contribution to the social polarisation debate by discussing the social transformations occurring with reference to Singapore. It is suggested that within Singapore, rather than the development of a polarised structure, there is a trend towards a professionalised occupation structure and a growing middle-upper income-group.

It has been argued that the global city-social polarisation thesis put forward by scholars looking at North American cities cannot be easily transferred to global cities in other parts of the world. Recent research has illustrated that whilst there may be some change in levels of social polarisation in global cities outside the US, the form, structure and causes of social polarisation are different. This paper extends the debate by looking at Sydney, Australia. It is argued that whilst changes in occupational structure and income polarisation are partially explained by economic restructuring associated with globalisation, global processes alone cannot fully explain these changes. The paper points to the significance of the inclusion of factors such as the unemployed, the gendered structure of occupations and migration.

Contemporary studies into residential mobility focus on mover households, but pay little attention to households that do not move. Conceptually, it is assumed that households make a voluntary decision to move when their current residence no longer meets their needs. This argument does not however account for households who, in the face of residential dissatisfaction, renovate or undertake alterations to better satisfy their needs. This paper presents data for Adelaide, South Australia to look at the extent to which owners renovate their homes. The analysis identifies two groups of renovators-non-mover renovators and mover renovators. Using data from the Housing and Location Preference Survey, an analysis is presented which discusses the factors which may influence renovation activity of these two groups.

The potential impacts that a range of social, economic, demographic and structural factors have on an individual's level of perceived satisfaction with their neighbourhood continue to be an important focus of research interest. This paper concentrates on a specific feature of the neighbourhood satisfaction literature by considering the impact of local neighbourhood socioeconomic mix on satisfaction. It suggests that, if neighbourhood satisfaction is associated with strong and sustainable communities, then understanding the drivers of neighbourhood satisfaction remains an important part of the empirical investigation. Using a combination of survey data and aggregate census data, the paper considers how, net of other factors, the socioeconomic mix of the local neighbourhood impacts on satisfaction. It finds that the socioeconomic mix characteristics of the neighbourhood do matter in understanding neighbourhood satisfaction and suggests that this has important implications for polices aiming at strengthening and sustaining local communities.

There has been a growing awareness that the issue of labour market disadvantage is substantially greater than merely considering unemployment and the ability to find a job. There is an increasing literature that points to the advantages of considering a broader concept which accounts not only for those people who are traditionally unemployed, but also for individuals who are underemployed and those who are sub-unemployed or discouraged workers. Taking multidimensional survey and census data for Australian metropolitan regions, this paper applies a broad employability framework to an understanding of labour underutilisation which presents the risk of underutilisation as a function of individual characteristics, personal circumstances and the impact of local labour market characteristics. The analysis finds that the risk of labour underutilisation is associated with a range of individual characteristics and personal circumstances together with the characteristics of the metropolitan local labour market.

Antisocial behaviour including littering and graffiti, crime and social disorder pose an important social problem within contemporary cities. Perceptions regarding the extent of antisocial behaviour are likely to differ not only along socioeconomic and demographic lines of the individual but importantly are also likely to differ depending on the type of neighbourhood or community one resides in. In particular, it is often assumed that antisocial behaviour, both real and perceived, will be higher in localities characterised by higher levels of public housing. Situated broadly in the antisocial behaviour and neighbourhood effects/social mix literature this paper examines perceptions of antisocial behaviour reported in a large sample survey in Australia focusing specifically on how responses differ by the housing social mix characteristics of the neighbourhood the respondent lives in.

"In diesem Beitrag wird die mangelnde Auslastung von Arbeitskräften untersucht, und es werden die Faktoren analysiert, die mit dem Risiko einer mangelnden Auslastung von Einzelpersonen verknüpft sind, die in diversen, nicht metropolitanen Arbeitsmarktregionen eingebettet sind. Anhand von Umfrage- und Volkszählungsdaten für nicht metropolitane Regionen in Australien wenden wir einen breiten Rahmen der Beschäftigungsfähigkeit an, mit dem das Risiko einer mangelnden Auslastung als Funktion von individuellen Merkmalen, persönlichen Umständen und Merkmalen des Arbeitsmarktes dargestellt wird. Aus der Analyse geht hervor, dass eine mangelnde Auslastung mit persönlichen Merkmalen und Umständen sowie mit den Bedingungen des lokalen Arbeitsmarktes verknüpft ist. Die Ergebnisse lassen darauf schließen, dass eine Politik zur Bekämpfung der mangelnden Auslastung von Arbeitskräften auf die Ergebnisse eines mehrstufigen Rahmens abzielen muss, um effektiv zu sein."
