Mental health content on social media usually highlights positive emotions, especially hope. This article presents an experimental study on the effects of hopeful social media posts on Instagram. Drawing on appraisal theory and the phenomenon of spillover effects, we developed a 2 × 2 between-subjects post-test experiment, where we manipulated the message type (i.e., hope message vs. control condition) and the level of endorsement (i.e., high vs. low number of likes) of Instagram posts. Following exposure to our media stimuli, we studied the effects on subsequent levels of hope, life satisfaction, mental health stigma, willingness to disclose about mental health, and willingness to provide support on social media among a sample of n = 479 young adults ( Mage = 20.97 years, SD = 2.10). Our pre-registered analysis revealed no significant main or interaction effects in the predicted direction. We discuss the findings in the context of health communication, reflect the study's limitations, and provide suggestions for future research.

AbstractThe visualization of social theory is an important part of the development and communication of our theoretical ideas. While most theorists use figures of some kind, few if any have formal training, or guiding rules or principles for the representation of theory. This has often led to poor visualization efforts, and the visual culture of sociology continues to lag behind the natural sciences. The intent of this paper is to serve as a practical and empirically aided guide for social theorists, by providing insights surrounding the cognitive and perceptual properties of certain elements and figures. Through these properties we identify four major problems in theory visualization: vagueness, reduction, unwanted spatial inferences and unwanted metaphorical inferences. We offer solutions to these problems, and to improving theory visualization more generally. Our hope is that this paper will serve as a resource for more thoughtful and informed visualization for practicing social theorists.

The development of historical geographical information systems (HGIS) and other methods from the digital humanities have revolutionised historical research on cultural landscapes. Additionally, the opening up of increasingly diverse collections of source material, often incomplete and difficult to interpret, has led to methodologically innovative experiments. One of today's major challenges, however, concerns the concepts and tools to be deployed for mapping processes of transformation—that is, interpreting and imagining the relational complexity of urban and rural landscapes, both in space and in time, at micro- and macro-scale.

Mapping Landscapes in Transformation gathers experts from different disciplines, active in the fields of historical geography, urban and landscape history, archaeology and heritage conservation. They are specialised in a wide variety of space-time contexts, including regions within Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and periods from antiquity to the 21st century."

Weltweit gibt es fast 40 Millionen Flüchtlinge, die Hälfte davon sind Kinder unter 18 Jahren. Sie fliehen vor Kriegen, vor Armut und vor Ausbeutung. Es ist eine traurige Tatsache: Kinder werden massakriert, vergewaltigt und zu Krüppeln gemacht. Sie werden als Soldaten ausgebeutet oder dazu gezwungen, sich auf der Straße zu verkaufen. Viele dieser Kinder mussten mit ansehen, wie ihre Eltern, Freunde und Lehrer misshandelt oder sogar getötet wurden. Solche Erlebnisse bleiben nicht ohne Folgen. Die Kinder leiden unter Alpträumen und Angstzuständen. Sie werden aggressiv oder ziehen sich ganz in sich zurück. Sie brauchen Hilfe. UNICEF engagiert sich für diese Kinder. Flüchtlinge, die in ihre Heimat zurück können, finden dort oft nur Zerstörung wieder. Gemeinsam mit lokalen Organisationen hilft UNICEF, in den vom Krieg zerstörten Gebieten die Grundversorgung mit Nahrung, sauberem Wasser und Medikamenten wieder herzustellen. Doch manche Kinder können nicht einmal in ihre Heimat zurück. Sie werden zu Flüchtlingen in einem fremden Land, auch hier in Deutschland. In Deutschland leben mehr als 200000 Flüchtlingskinder, über 5000 davon sind Waisen. Unsere Aufgabe ist es, ihnen das Gefühl zu geben, dass sie bei uns ohne Angst leben können. Der Katalog geht mit seinen Beiträgen den Fragen nach, ob und wie sich diese Schicksale in der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur widerspiegeln, und welchen Beitrag die Literatur leisten kann, Kindern und Jugendlichen dieses weltweite und weitreichende Problem emotional und intellektuell verfügbar zu machen.

AbstractIn this study we measured the effect of COIL on intercultural competence development using a quasi-experimental design. Our sample consisted of 108 undergraduate students from two universities, one located in the Netherlands (NL) and one in the United States (US). Students' self-reported intercultural competence was measured using a pre-post survey which included the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Qualitative data were collected to complement our quantitative findings and to give a deeper insight into the student experience. The data showed a significantly bigger increase in intercultural competence for the US experimental group compared to the US control group, supporting our hypothesis that COIL develops intercultural competence. This difference was not observed for the NL students, possibly due to the NL control group being exposed to other international input during the course.
