Using an original investigative protocol and a data base of 4,127 national delegates from ten Moroccan political organizations, surveyed between 2008 and 2012, this article examines the characteristics of party members in Morocco. Initial results indicate that the field of Moroccan political parties is a small world dominated by city dwellers, mature men, and the most highly educated, wealthiest individuals. However, far from being isolated from ordinary citizens, there are social dynamics at work. While it cannot be reduced to a segmented clientele, it is, nonetheless, shaped by an ideal-typical opposition between parties of notables and parties of activists. Adapted from the source document.

An examination of the career of several members of three neighborhood associations in Casablanca and the manner in which they themselves describe their actions reveals the intricacies of the associative space and political sphere in Morocco. By virtue of a mirror effect, the frontiers between these two universes are the object of continuous struggle. Associative action is sometimes constructed independently and sometimes in connection with "politics". It is thus drawn upon as a substitute for political participation, a tribune for marginalized actors or a local-level springboard and can lead to renegotiation of relations with the political realm. By virtue of the very existence of points of junction between associative, partisan, electoral, labor union and protest scenes, associational action exposes those involved to several types of participation. It endows them with practical and cognitive competencies, is an incentive for them to interact with various agencies of governmentality and encourages a circular reconversion of resources and know-how. Associational action may also give rise to a taste for "politics" and electoral competition or that encourage its participants to become aware of their responsibilities. From one situation to the next, it is the object of a range of definitions, involvements and (micro) strategies that are as vast as they are variable, both diachronically and synchronically. Beyond the narrative which praises "the Moroccan exception", an extensive contentious movement has developed throughout the country. Far from being the product of a domino effect, the February 20 Movement stems notably from a process of building assumptions of similarity, from the reactivation of more or less abeyant structures. A wide coalition has developed within a field of both alliance and Opposition, at the intersection of formal political sphere and contentious politics, regardless of cleavages between leftist networks and Islamists. On a variety of scales involving the local, national, regional and international levels, an array of actions, interactions and events have contributed as much to the coalition taking roots as to the process of its erosion. In this paper, departing from a non causalist epistemology, we focus our attention on the Study of revolutionary situations, instead of background conditions or revolutionary outcomes which, as a literature review on the 'Arab uprisings' shows, have received the lion's share of research in the field, Furthermore we argue that one should move away from describing the recurrent properties of revolutionary situations to study the sequences of action -- here defined as complex chains of interaction -- which contribute to produce these situations. Based on a comparison of various cases in the MENA region, we identify a series of relational and cognitive processes which can able us to better understand how revolutionary situations are produced and develop.
