The rise of the British Campaign to Stop Immigration (BCSI) is examined through analysis of newspaper reports, secondary sources, & personal interviews. In 1968 English politics was dominated by the anti-immigration politics of Enoch Powell, especially in Yorkshire, a region impacted by extreme immigration & that perceived itself as the bedrock of English values. Jim Merrick, a Bradford Ward Councillor, established the Yorkshire Campaign to Stop Immigration in support of Powellian anti-immigration politics, which eventually culminated in the organization of the BCSI, & the passage of the 1971 Immigration Act, which ended all black primary immigration. That success caused racist politicking to subside, but the threatened expulsion of Asians from Uganda & their potential immigration to English brought it back into prominence. Racist media coverage of immigration issues continued to keep the BCSI in the public eye, but constant media haranguing of immigration undermined the impact of the message. Immigration had become overhyped &, coupled with the political organization of the black community, Merrick & the BCSI have disappeared from public view. D. Generoli
