"Social Work and Social Welfare: An Invitation is a best-selling text and website for introductory courses in social work. It provides students with the knowledge, skills, and values that are essential for working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, in a variety of practice settings. The sixth edition has been updated to reflect the contemporary world in which today's social workers practice, with current demographic, statistical, legislative, policy, and research information; sensitive discussions of ethical dilemmas; and fresh profiles of social workers with first-person narratives to demonstrate the dynamic field students will be joining. To address the dramatic changes in the world in which social workers practice since the fifth edition was released, we have revised and added content: Centering diversity, equity, inclusion to elevate anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice, including a critical review of our profession's history. Demonstrating how the pandemic exposed and intensified inequities as well as ways in which social workers responded to the needs of their clients, organizations, and communities. Updating language to reflect commitment and respect for inclusivity, gender identity, and non-gendered identities. The content in this text is supported by a range of fully updated instructor-led and student resources that are available on its companion website, www.routledgesw.com. Assignments, exercises, and readings that help instructors and students apply the concepts and theories the textbook reviews may be found there, as well as extensive interactive case studies to engage students in some of society's most challenging issues"--

• Summary: Human service nonprofit agencies exist within a turbulent environment. Recent developments and social policy changes have impacted upon nonprofit agencies and transformed services, thereby changing the service delivery system. Services for clients have changed and agencies are challenged to meet clients' needs with new constraints. Social workers in this environment have been faced with the challenge of developing new skills to respond to the political climate while continuing to meet clients' needs. Moreover, social work students placed in nonprofit agencies for their field education also encounter challenges. • Findings: Through the use of focus groups, this study found social workers' primary concerns related to managed care and welfare reform. Thus, student roles often involved functioning as staff and filling gaps within the agency, and students were challenged in their efforts to meet their learning needs. • Applications: Knowledge of agency context is essential for competent, effective social work practice. This qualitative study highlights the nature of the changing environment for nonprofit agencies, agency responses and the implications for social work practice and social work education. Agency administrators, social workers and students must continue to assess and respond to their environment as they seek to provide the most efficient and effective services to clients.

insurance, privatization, for-profit commercial activity, and increasing competition
for charitable funding are affecting nonprofit social service organizations. This study
of 244 nonprofit social service agencies explores the influence of social policy changes
on nonprofit organizations. The effects of such changes on social work practice and
social work field education within nonprofit organizations are explicated. Guidance
