8:1, pp. 59-69 ; This article uses the analysis of the 2004 European elections in the Spanish press as a case study that can be broached from the agenda building and framing theoretical frameworks. We seek to compare the media agenda in the 2004 and 1999 European elections by use of a content analysis in order to evaluate the impact of new real-world conditions (the March 11 Madrid bombings)and new strategies of political actors after the March 14 general elections concerning foreign affairs on the news coverage. The research also aims to advance framing research by identifying news frames (as the ``conflict frame?? and the ``political game frame??) that can link this study with prior ones. ; Ciencias de la Comunicaci?n II

Building on the assumption that journalists' attitudes toward public institutions can contribute to a decline in public trust, this article sets out to identify the driving forces behind journalists' confidence in public institutions. Based on interviews with 2000 journalists from 20 countries, variation in trust is modeled across the individual level of journalists, the organizational level of news media, and the societal level of countries. Our findings suggest that the principal determinants of journalists' trust emanate from a country's political performance, from state ownership in the media, and from the extent to which people tend to trust each other. Journalism culture and power distance, however, seem to have relatively little weight in the calculus of journalists' institutional trust.

The international empirical research about journalists' perception of their professional roles and functions presents a remarkable increase in recent years, but not so in the Spanish case. In this research, which is part of the comparative transnational study "Worlds of Journalism Study", we analyse data from a survey conducted in Spain (representative and stratified by type of media and Autonomous Community) to 390 journalists from 117 media, who were consulted about their work to detect their professional attitudes. The study identifies six roles: the watchdog, the speaker of citizenship, the instructor of the audience, favours the status quo, entertains public opinion and the disseminator of objective information. Professionals feel more identified with the role of speaker of citizenship, in relation with the Spanish political, economic and social changes in recent years. This function downplays the predominant role in the recent similar studies on Spanish journalists: the disseminator of objective information. We also found two large groups of journalists: the stimulators and the narcotizators of public opinion. Moreover, it was observed that some organizational factors (in particular, the property of media) and other individual ones (such as gender, age and years of work experience) significantly influence the perceptions of professional roles.

The concept of negativity in political news has not reached the status of a homogenous, overarching theoretical concept. This article proposes conceptual understandings, categorizations and practical operationalizations of negativity in the news that reflect the consensus of existing work paying special attention to recent European research. This work aims to systematize existing concepts and categories in order to increase comparability and cumulativity of empirical evidence. To structure and standardize dimensions of negativity in the news we differentiate firstly between negativity and confrontation, secondly between frame-related negativity and individual actor-related negativity, and thirdly between non-directional and directional dimensions of negativity. This article provides a common set of indicators and matrice-based classifications of negativity (and its antithesis) in the news to measure and categorize its intensity and multi-dimensionality.

; The media have devoted increasing spaces to reporting on corruption. Thus, the media exercise the function of analyzing and controlling the activity of political institutions. Parliamentarians play this role as well, and if corruption has gained increasing media attention, it should have done so among MPs as well, since media and political agendas are closely interrelated. Inspection work becomes essential when there are institutions not subject to direct control, such as the monarchy in Spain. Since the abdication of Juan Carlos I in 2014, the situation of irregular behavior of king emeritus has attracted the attention of the press, which has broken its pact of silence on the monarchy by adopting different positions. Thus, the aim of this work is to analyze the inter-influence between the political and media agendas in this situation. For this, the quantitative methodology is used and a content analysis is carried out of all the parliamentary initiatives and news from El Mundo, El País and El Confidencial related to the previous monarch and published between July 2014 and the March 15, 2021, which represents a total of 93 initiatives and 1,520 news.

Además, se observa que algunos factores organizacionales (en concreto, la propiedad del medio) y otros individuales (el género, la edad y los años de experiencia laboral) influyen significativamente en las percepciones de los roles profesionales ; International empirical research on the perception that journalists have of their professional roles and functions has increased considerably in recent years, although not in the case of Spain. This article reports key findings from a comparative survey of the role perceptions, epistemological orientations and ethical views of 1800 journalists from 18 countries. The results show that detachment, non-involvement, providing political information and monitoring the government are considered essential journalistic functions around the globe. Impartiality, the reliability and factualness of information, as well as adherence to universal ethical principles are also valued worldwide, though their perceived importance varies across countries. ; Ciencias de la Comunicaci?n II
