In December 2000, fair and free elections were held in Ghana for a new president and parliament. But newly-elect President John A. Kufuor inherited a run-down economy with high inflation and massive devaluation of the Cedi from his predecessor Jerry Rawlings. There are difficult times ahead for the West African country. Kenya was once regarded as one of the most liberal and market-friendly countries in Africa. Investors flocked to the East African country, and although Jomo Kenyatta and later Daniel Arap Moi ruled with an iron fist, Kenya remained a trusted friend of the West. With the wave of democratisation sweeping Africa, Kenya was also forced to open up its political system. But despite several rounds of parliamentary elections - described by observers as moderately fair and free - President Moi is still in power, and the country has slid from prosperity to despair.
