Abstract
In this paper, we address gender differences in the host language proficiency of humanitarian migrants. Prior research has produced inconclusive results with regard to women's host language proficiency relative to that of men: sometimes women's proficiency exceeds that of men, sometimes women lag behind men, and sometimes there are no substantial differences. Using data on recent humanitarian migrants in Germany, we investigate factors contributing to similarities and differences in men's and women's language proficiency. We consider gender differences with respect to the family-related factors: marital status, children's ages and children's childcare situations are important for women but not for men. These findings point to the continued relevance of a gendered division of work. It also becomes clear that gendered role expectations are particularly consequential for mothers and wives. Moreover, we find evidence that women are more efficient learners than men are, while they have fewer learning opportunities than men.
Autonomy and independence have become crucial elements of end-of-life decision making. Opinions on the latter are, however, strongly contested in public discourses. This contribution analyses arguments in favour of and against a Dutch civil society initiative which promotes the extension of the legislation on euthanasia. The authors investigate Dutch newspapers associated with three groups: religious, liberal and humanist perspectives, and do so by utilising quantitative and qualitative elements from a discourse-analytical perspective, raising the following questions: Which stances can be identified? How do different parties position themselves with regard to a 'completed life' and a 'good death'? To what extent do these positions create demarcations between 'us' and 'them'? The authors show that the debate developed along the lines of three key topoi: the topos of autonomy, the topos of human worth and the topos of embeddedness. The authors thereby identify how the different discursive positions define different visions of dying as 'legitimate' and as a proper end to a completed life. ; Version of record

Public debates are always in the danger of excluding the groups most affected. The rules of a democratically-oriented, communicative consensus-building process, however, imply a demand for the (social) inclusion and respect for all people concerned. Furthermore, in order to fulfill this demand, an ante- cendent practice which advocates openness in the general public and empowers persons concerned to take action and participate in the discourse. The empowerment to take action comprises a structural and a personal dimension. The discussion has the chance to become a public one, and as a consequence, the public discussion has a chance to become a truly democratic one. This cannot be achieved until an opportunity to participate in the public discourse exists in practice for those who are able to communicate as well as for the representatives of those who cannot make their voices heard. The Church is – in recognition of its «communicative diakonia» – called upon to act in an empowering manner. The Church will not be able to avoid developing its interior public sphere.
