William James' Pragmatismus und Jean-Paul Sartres Existentialismus sind die beiden letzten «großen Erzählungen» der Philosophie. Aufgrund ihrer Differenzen in Bezug auf Methodik und das Übersinnliche werden die Unterschiede zwischen ihnen häufig betont. Dieses Buch zeigt, dass eigentlich die Gemeinsamkeiten überwiegen: Beide gehen von einer doppelten Singularität der Subjektivität aus, der Einmaligkeit jeder Situation und der Einmaligkeit der Perspektive des Individuums auf diese Situation. Dies drückt sich bei beiden Philosophien in einem epistemologischen wie ethischen Pluralismus und einem Bekenntnis zur individuellen Verantwortung aus, weshalb sie auch im 21. Jahrhundert noch von Aktualität sind.
