Die Arbeitergenossenschaften, in denen Produktion oder Handel von den Angestellten dieser Organisationen selbst kontrolliert werden, stellen in Indien ein relativ neuartiges Phänomen dar. Trotz des Spannungsverhältnisses zwischen Selbstbestimmung und Abhängigkeit, in welchem die Arbeitergenossenschaften oft stehen, sind sie ein sehr wirksames Mittel zur Stärkung von Arbeitern, die ihr Überleben unter prekären Bedingungen wirtschaftlich sichern müssen. Der Autor gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die Entstehung der Genossenschaftsidee und diskutiert die Probleme demokratischer Kontrolle. Anhand von praktischen Beispiele in Tee-Plantagen und in Minen Indiens beschreibt er anschließend, wie sich die Existenzbedingungen von Genossenschaften in der Realität darstellen. Er stellt dabei insbesondere die Umstände heraus, unter denen es zur Übernahme von Produktion und Management durch die Belegschaften und zur Bildung von Genossenschaften kommt. Er skizziert vor diesem Hintergrund die notwendigen Bedingungen für eine erfolgreiche Entwicklung von Genossenschaften. (ICI)
