The pop wave which first struck the French primary Sch in 1952, the extension of compulsory educ & the desire on the part of parents to maximize their children's educ have presented primary educ with serious problems. Teachers, on their part, are active in both curricular & extra- curricular duties. These conditions occur when the problem of recruitment is esp serious in the case of men instructors. The profession is becoming ever more a feminine one (66.4% of the instructors in 1959 & 88.4% of the eventual replacements are women). In contrast to the time between WWI & WWII & to the 19th cent, the role of the teacher as an adviser & person of note has diminished considerably. Today, the majority of the replacements come from the Depts situated to the; south of the Loire to fill the vacancies in the Paris area, in the North, & to a lesser extent, in the East. In spite of everything, the ideological influence of the French teacher is still a considerable one. Tr by J. A. Broussard from IPSA.
