An examination of sources of disagreement associated with the bilingual policy adopted by the Canadian province of Manitoba, based in part on data drawn from 404 briefs submitted by various parties during the 1983/84 language dispute. The conceptual framework involves the identification of symbolic & material rewards inherent in the extension of bilingualism. Findings indicate that these rewards, or interests, clearly differentiate French Canadian briefs from those submitted by other parties, with the former obviously being in favor of bilingualism. 2 Tables, 22 References.
