This contribution to a symposium on Karin Fierke's 2022 book, Snapshots from Home, reflects on the dialectical aspects of her analysis, her contribution to Global IR, and the implications of her work for the field of International Relations.

La création d'un espace discursif mondial dans l'enseignement des Relations internationales est confrontée à trois défis majeurs : transcender l'unicité d'une discipline, surmonter les chauvinismes et intégrer les savoirs pratiques. Nous vivons dans un univers d'ordres mondiaux multiples, qui coexistent et s'interpénètrent. Il nous faut, par conséquent, approcher l'enseignement des Relations internationales de façon à comprendre et à transcender ces différences bien réelles. Nous envisageons les façons de parvenir à l'interdisciplinarité (plutôt qu'à la multidisciplinarité), nous identifions et problématisons les différentes formes de chauvinisme et nous explorons les possibilités d'intégrer les savoirs pratiques (de lier la théorie et la pratique). Cet article s'achève sur quelques recommandations dans l'espoir d'atteindre une forme critique de cosmopolitisme dans l'enseignement des Relations internationales.

Barry Buzan & Lene Hansen (2009) have filled an important gap in the literature by writing the first comprehensive survey of international security studies. While their work is systematically organized, their analytical framework could be strengthened by giving greater consideration to the complex interrelationships between theory and practices and by embedding theoretical constructs (and their inherently contradictory developments) within history.

The article probes the possibilities for human rights violations made possible by the UN's use of targeted sanctions against specific individuals and groups. The author is particularly concerned by the application of targeted sanctions in support of counterterrorism measures since 2001, including the ability to freeze financial assets. The article criticizes the behavior of the UN Security Council in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, since the latter accepted virtually every US-sponsored statement of case placed before the 1267 committee. The article summarizes the subsequent negative reaction to the use of these sanctions across the European community. The author believes that this regime risks the further erosion of the credibility and future utility of the instrument of multilateral sanctions in general. In response, the UN has reformed its process of adding individuals to the 1267 list by implementing a measure of legal due process for terrorist suspects. Adapted from the source document.

Evaluates UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (UNSCR 1540), adopted Apr 2004, which obliges all member states to take steps to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), particularly by nonstate actors. Innovative features of UN counterterrorist activities in the wake of the 11 Sept 2001 terrorist attacks against the US are described & their effectiveness is evaluated. Lessons learned about the implementation of counterterrorist measures after 9/11 & their implications for the implementation of UNSCR 1540 are discussed; remaining challenges & new policy directions are also considered.
