L'annonce de l'augmentation des frais de scolarité universitaires par le gouvernement provincial du Québec a provoqué une lutte étudiante massive. Les étudiant·es en grève, dénommé·es « carrés rouges » en référence au carré de feutre rouge épinglé à leur boutonnière, symbolisant le refus de devoir plonger « carrément dans le rouge » pour pouvoir étudier, ont dénoncé non seulement la hausse des frais d'inscription, mais aussi le système d'endettement individuel adossé à cette mesure. La décision gouvernementale inversait en effet l'équation progressiste : ce n'était plus à la collectivité d'assurer l'essentiel des coûts associés à l'enseignement supérieur, la société toute entière gagnant à compter sur des citoyen·es éclairé·es. C'était désormais les diplômé·es qui, à titre individuel, apparaissaient comme les bénéficiaires de leur formation et se devaient alors de la financer directement. Par leur lutte victorieuse, les « carrés rouges » ont ainsi rejeté la vision du monde faisant du crédit l'instrument privilégié de tout projet de vie et de l'éducation une forme d'investissement financier.

Nous proposons d'entendre ici la rationalité politique d'Occupy Wall Street comme une protestation contre une situation d'endettement qui se présente aujourd'hui telle une « condition existentielle » pour la majorité des Américains, et comme une tentative de construire un lien de solidarité entre les endettés par la mise en relief de la dimension structurelle et collective de cette condition partagée. Nous analyserons ainsi les discours et les stratégies d'un groupe militant né de la mouvance OWS : Strike Debt. En agissant au niveau des affects et des représentations qui soutiennent la prétention à la légitimité des dettes, son action vise à faire du défaut de paiement un acte politique capable de renverser le pouvoir de l'industrie financière.

International audience ; At the junction of a purely bookish history of political ideas and of what could be called a socio-history of sensibility, this article claims that the modern political rationality is based on a peculiar form of subjectification captured by the notion of "self-ownership". Classically formulated by John Locke, the idea, according to which the end pursued by men when they submit to a government is "the preservation of their property", implies the existence of a foundational self-ownership, which conditions the individual's capacity to acquire properties. Thomas Hobbes wrote similarly, a few decades earlier, that "[o]f things held in propriety, those that are dearest to a man are his own life and limbs", those bodily things by means of which his liberty can come about as the unlimited extension of his vital force. At the root of the liberal doctrine thus lies this mode of self-relationship that holds that, possessing himself by virtue of natural right, the individual is qualified to receive from the sovereign authority the guarantee of his exclusive right to that which he can acquire, as well as the assurance of being protected from harm. In the political discourse as well as in the sensibility of modern men, to possess one's own body appears as the condition for freedom. This article aims to demonstrate the long-standing of such a conception of selfrelationship within other traditions critical of liberalism, such as the Marxist theory of alienation or the feminist critique of corporeal subjection to patriarchy. If the reappropriation of one's body, wrenched from the grips of the powers that exploit it, can foster emancipation, it raises the question whether or not this entails the risk of repeating the underside of the liberal posture, that is, the affective disposition that leads men to see in others a threat against selfownership, of which the Hobbesian state of nature, the motive of another form of servitude, is a paradigmatic example. ; Au croisement d'une histoire purement livresque ...

Avoir un corps en propre apparaît donc, dans le discours politique mais aussi dans la sensibilité des modernes, comme la condition de la liberté. L'article vise à démontrer la pérennité d'une telle conception du rapport à soi au sein de traditions critiques de la doctrine libérale, qu'il s'agisse de la théorie marxiste de l'aliénation ou de la critique féministe d'une corporalité asservie aux exigences du patriarcat. Si la réappropriation de son corps, son arrachement à l'emprise des puissances qui l'exploitent peuvent apparaître comme un moyen d'émancipation, la question se pose de savoir si cela ne risque pas de reconduire ce qui constitue l'envers de la posture libérale, soit cette disposition affective qui mène à voir en autrui une menace à la propriété de soi, dont l'état de nature hobbesien, motif d'un autre genre de servitude, offre l'exemple paradigmatique.

La crise écologique que nous traversons se manifeste notamment par le dérèglement climatique, le déclin de la biodiversité et diverses formes de pollution et de dégradation des écosystèmes. Cette crise est de nature socioéconomique dans la mesure où ce sont les systèmes de gestion et d'aménagement du territoire qui en sont la cause. Pour parvenir à en atténuer les effets, nous proposons une économie écologique pour le Québec, soit une approche fondée sur une meilleure compréhension des systèmes sociaux, économiques et environnementaux et de leurs interactions. Nous cherchons à savoir comment orienter les politiques publiques et l'économie québécoise afin de respecter les limites de la biosphère, tout en assurant une qualité de vie pour tous. Cet ouvrage réunit des textes issus de recherches interdisciplinaires au croisement du développement économique et de l'atteinte d'objectifs écologiques et sociaux. Il offre des analyses et des réponses pour alimenter les débats politiques au Québec dans un contexte d'urgence climatique, et nous invite à remettre en question la transition basée seulement sur l'efficience technologique. Ce livre d'adresse à toute personne intéressée par les questions environnementales dans leurs dimensions socioéconomique et écologique.

Incentive-based mechanisms, such as payments for ecosystem services (PES) are increasingly being employed to encourage adoption of biodiversity conservation practices in agriculture. Farmers' participation in a PES depends – amongst other factors – on their interactions with previous programs and schemes. This research analyses how the institutional characteristics and interactions of incentive-based mechanisms shape the type of farmers' participation and the achievement of desired socio-ecological outcomes. This research focusses on the institutional frameworks of two programs in the Province of Quebec, Canada: the 'Prime-Vert' Program (public agri-environment scheme) and the 'Alternative Land Use Services' (ALUS) initiative (a privately-funded "PES" scheme). The institutional prescriptions of these two programs were examined and compared through the lenses of the Institutional Analysis and Development framework. We reveal the impact of the institutional framework on farmers' participation by assessing the degree of farmers' engagement in the implementation and management of schemes. Our results showed a strong dependence of the private PES on the public scheme, rendering both programs ultimately managed under the remit of the provincial government. While the complementarity of both programs diversifies sources of funding for farmers, the presence of rigid rules governing these incentives tend to treat farmers as passive beneficiaries of a network of centralized subsidies which they have little control over. This compromises farmers' autonomy as the rigidity of rules impedes any attempt to achieve active participation in the design and implementation of agri-environmental practices.

The green economy is proposed as a solution to address growing and potentially irreversible ecological crises. But what happens when environmental solutions are premised on the same logics of brutal simplification and dehumanization that sustain and reinforce systems of oppression and ecological breakdown? In this article, we describe the transformation of the biophysical landscape of the planet into replicable blueprints of the plantation plot. The plantation as a colonial-era organizational template is an ongoing ecological process premised on disciplining bodies and landscapes into efficient, predictable, calculable, and controllable plots to optimize commodity production and is dependent on racialized and gendered processes of dehumanization. The visible cultural, physical, aesthetic, and political singularity of the plot, under the guise of objectivity and neutrality, permits a tangible depiction of the way ecological breakdown takes place. We interrogate the notion of "greening" as a strategy to combat the unintended impacts of colonial plantation ecology, arguing that such tactics further reinforce the template of plantation ecology rather than dismantle it. We first conceptualize the historical plantation and its biophysical, cognitive, and corporeal organizational principles. We then offer examples of "greening" as new, more inclusive (but equally detrimental) forms of plantation logics, and crucially identify how these extensions of plantation logic get co-opted by resistance agents, from social movements to disease and pestilence. We consider sustainability certifications of palm oil through the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in Colombia and compensatory afforestation programs designed to offset forest destruction through monoculture plantations in India. We conclude by highlighting how abolition ecologies can serve as an antidote to plantation logic and highlight necessary relationships of self-reflexivity, repair and collective solidarity required to disinvest in plantation ecology.
