In der modernen Gesellschaft gelten Entscheidungen als sicher, die auf Grundlage fundierten Wissens getroffen werden. Das gilt besonders für Umweltgestaltungen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird in der Umweltsoziologie in jüngster Zeit argumentiert, dass der Fokus gesellschaftlichen Handelns von der Wissensbeschaffung als einzig akzeptierter Strategie auf die Pluralisierung von Strategien im Umgang mit Nichtwissen gerichtet werden sollte. Die Dissertation nimmt dieses Postulat zum Anlass und analysiert den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Nichtwissen in alltäglichen Entscheidungsprozessen. Anhand des umweltpolitischen Themas der Altlastensanierung wird in dieser Arbeit der Frage nachgegangen, ob und unter welchen Bedingungen Wissensgrenzen von Akteuren thematisiert und in Entscheidungen einbezogen werden können. Basierend auf der Analyse von zwei Fallstudien wird ein Modell zur Erklärung solcher Entscheidungsprozessen entwickelt.

Technologies impact societies in manifold and often unforeseen ways. In several fields of technology (e.g. nanotechnology, biotechnology) it has been argued that reflexive modes of technology development are appropriate to deal with this challenge. A central aim of reflexive modes is the integration of broader societal perspectives early in technology development processes in order to achieve a more (societal) responsible way of technology development. Whereas social scientific accounts on mining and resource extraction emphasize topics like corporate social responsibility, occupational safety, or distributive justice, little light is shed on the possibility of more reflexive modes that integrate societal perspectives early on in the development of resource extraction technologies. These technologies decisively influence social life worlds. Within this article we will shed light on mining technologies, and discuss the relevance of early integration of societal concerns into their development. We argue that an early integration of these concerns can help to shape new technologies in societally responsible ways, and by so doing, to deal with globally increasing opposition to resource extraction operations. To underline this argument, the article delineates four major challenges connected to technology development and application in the domain of resource extraction: the identification of the problems' locus, knowledge integration, the consideration of non-knowledge, and the reflection of manifold roles that actors have in technology development contexts. The article concludes with future research challenges for technology development in the domain of resource extraction.

Energy transitions are knowledge-intensive processes where a multitude of actors are trying to cope with inevitable knowledge gaps, surprises, and uncertainties. In this context, we focus on two techno-physical phenomena that are gaining practical relevance with the expansion of wind and geothermal energy extraction, and are surrounded by significant unknowns: wake effects and temperature plumes. Both phenomena can potentially affect the efficiency of energy production, but the extent of their impact is not yet known. Based on 28 semi-structured interviews with experts in the fields of wind and geothermal energy, we explore how different central actors perceive and interpret non-knowledge of wake effects and temperature plumes, and how they deal with it. We show that there are strategies for either using non-knowledge as a basis for action or simply ignoring it and sweeping knowledge gaps under the rug. Both strategies serve the function of protecting agency and keeping things going.
