The Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USSR under Gorbachev

Ausgehend von einem Überblick über die zeitgeschichtliche Entwicklung der Griechisch-Katholischen Kirche der Ukraine seit dem Ende des II. Weltkriegs informiert der Autor über die im Zuge der Gorbatschowschen Glasnost- und Demokratisierungspolitik seitens der bis dato in den Untergrund verbannten Ukrainischen Katholischen Kirche unternommenenBemühungen um eine über die faktische Anerkennung hinausgehende rechtliche Legalisierung. In diesem Kontext beschäftigt sich der Verfasser mit den zwischen der UdSSR und dem Vatikan unter Papst Johannes Paul II. geführten Gesprächen bzw. Verhandlungen über die Problematik der Unierten Kirche resp. der Legalisierung der Ukrainischen Katholischen Kirche sowie mit der Haltung des Moskauer Patriarchats der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche in dieser Frage.
