THE STRUGGLES SINCE THE END OF THE COLD WAR ARE OVER RECOGNITION AND IDENTITIES EITHER LOST OR THREATENED BY THE ENORMOUS DISLOCATING PRESSURES OF A RAPILY CHANGING WORLD ECONOMY. THEY ARE A PROTEST AGAINST THE DECLINING QUALITY OF LIFE, THE BREAKDOWN OF COMMUNITY AND ORDER, THE ECLIPSE OF OLD SYMBOLS AND DISCOURSES. IT TAKES PLACE IN A MILIEU OF CAPITAL FLIGHT AND DISINTEGRATING ECONOMIES. THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE ESCAPE FROM POLITICS; ANTI-POLITICS IN THE US; GLOBAL ORDER AND DISORDER; AND A FALSE SENSE OF EMPOWERMENT. IT WARNS THAT WHERE SOCIAL CONFLICTS TAKE ON THE CHARACTER OF VIOLENT, PAROCHIAL TURF WARS, THE RIGHT-WING AUTHORITARIAN SOLUTION BECOMES AN EVER INCREASING POSSIBILITY.

The status of the U in leftist-intellectual discourse is reviewed, focusing on higher education's role in advanced capitalism, its position in SC contradiction & conflict, & its potential & actual sponsorship of Marxism & "academic praxis." While the academy is viewed as a primary locus for social reproduction & expanding rationalization, it is also seen as crucial to the development of alternative movements (eg, feminism, civil rights, environmentalism) in the "new middle strata." Distinctions between a technocratic & a critical intelligentsia within the U are identified; pedagogical strategies to be adopted by radicals are outlined, including interdisciplinary programs, flexible methodologies, democratization of authority relations, & self-sustaining direction within the radical community. The Critical Studies Program of the U of California, Los Angeles, is cited as a prototype of such strategies. Academic praxis goals are delineated, focusing on self-management & organizing around U fiscal crisis & community outreach. L. Whittemore.
