En octubre de 2014 se celebraron las elecciones nacionales en Uruguay, resultando vencedor el expresidente Tabaré Vázquez y revalidándose la mayoría parlamentaria del Frente Amplio. Los resultados electorales fueron similares a los de 2009, confirmando el apoyo popular del Frente Amplio, en la presidencia desde 2005. En este trabajo se analizan los resultados en las elecciones legislativas y presidenciales de Uruguay en 2014, situándolos en la evolución del sistema de partidos uruguayo de las últimas décadas, a la vez que se atiende a la distribución territorial del voto, y el contexto político y socioeconómico previo a las elecciones. Igualmente se apunta a las principales claves para entender la tercera victoria consecutiva del Frente así como las implicaciones de dichos resultados a futuro tanto para el presidente Tabaré Vázquez como para el partido. Estas elecciones confirman el predominio del Frente Amplio en Uruguay, frente a los dos partidos tradicionales históricos, el Nacional y el Colorado, que llevan ya más de 10 años en la oposición, así como la división territorial del país: el interior apoya sobre todo a los partidos tradicionales, de centro-derecha, y la zona urbana, especialmente Montevideo, a la izquierda. In October 2014 the national elections in Uruguay took place, the expresident Tabaré Vázquez won and the Broad Front got again the parliamentary majority. The electoral results were quite similar to 2009, confirming the Broad Front's popular support, with the presidency since 2005. This paper aims to analyse the results in both presidential and legislative elections in Uruguay in 2014, contextualizing them in the Uruguayan party system evolution in recent decades, also focusing on the territorial distribution of the vote, and the prior political and socioeconomic context to the elections. Likewise, the main key factors to explain the third consecutive victory of the Front are highlighted, as well as what these results involve for the future, both for president Tabaré Vázquez and for the party. This election confirms the predominance of the Broad Front in Uruguay, in opposition to the two historical traditional parties, National and Coloured, which have been in the opposition for more than 10 years, as well as the territorial division of the country: inland supports center-right traditional parties, and the urban zone, Montevideo specially, the left.

Due to the historical centrality of presidents in Latin America, we argue that presidential approval can be a source of group membership among citizens, creating a division between "ingroups" and "outgroups." We test the effects of such division on tolerant attitudes toward the rights of system critics to participate in political life in four ways (from the least to the most threatening for the ingroup): voting, giving speeches on television, running for office, and demonstrating peacefully. We further argue that this effect is conditioned by the economic context, and that the ingroup/outgroup divide is activated when an economy performs poorly. Analysis of the AmericasBarometer 2018/2019 survey is consistent with our expectations. Specifically, our results suggest that the main predictor for tolerant attitudes is presidential approval, and that the individual-level effect dissipates in a context of good performance of the economy, which causes the presidential ingroup to not feel threatened by any outgroup.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar los motivos detrás del apoyo a la protesta, diferenciando entre dos tipos: manifestaciones legales, y bloqueos de carreteras. Para ello se contrastan dos teorías: movilización de recursos, y radicalismo desafecto, tomando como referencia el caso de Argentina. Se utilizan datos del Barómetro de las Américas para el periodo 2008-2017. Controlando la temporalidad a través de un modelo logístico ordenado de efectos fijos, los resultados muestran que la teoría de la movilización de recursos tiene mayores sustentos empíricos, aun con la excepción del apoyo a la democracia en los bloqueos. Además, el análisis muestra que los principales determinantes, el apoyo a la democracia e interés en la política, se mantienen en el tiempo, aunque se refuerza el rechazo a las manifestaciones legales por los no demócratas y los desinteresados en política.

Although the US preserves a dominant position in Latin America, China's rise poses economic and political challenges and has set up a potential battle for the hearts and minds of the Latin American populace. To explore this theme, this article considers the level of support among Latin Americans toward China and the United States at the country and individual levels, the causes of variance thereof, and whether the views of China, the newcomer, covary with views about the region's traditional power broker. We provide evidence that the views do not covary, either positively or negatively, largely because while attitudes toward the United States are structured by ideology and other factors, attitudes toward China are relatively unstructured. This lack of structure appears to be the result of China's success in appealing to diverse sectors of Latin American society, which, in turn, should positively influence its future trajectory. ResumenAunque Estados Unidos mantiene una posición dominante en América Latina, el ascenso de China plantea desafíos económicos y políticos y ha creado una batalla potencial por los corazones y mentes de la población latinoamericana. Para explorar este tema, este artículo considera el nivel de apoyo entre los latinoamericanos hacia China y Estados Unidos a nivel nacional e individual, las causas de la variación del mismo, y si las opiniones sobre el recién llegado coinciden con las opiniones sobre el poder tradicional en la región. Proporcionamos evidencia de que los puntos de vista no covarían —positiva o negativamente— en gran medida porque, si bien las actitudes hacia los Estados Unidos están estructuradas por la ideología y otros factores, las actitudes hacia China están relativamente desetructuradas. Esta ausencia de estructura podría ser el resultado del éxito de China al atraer opiniones positivas de diversos sectores de la sociedad latinoamericana, lo que, a su vez, debería influir de manera positiva en su trayectoria futura.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar, con datos de encuestas a legisladores en 16 países de América Latina, los determinantes de las evaluaciones de dos líderes políticos, Lula da Silva y Dilma Rousseff, teniendo en cuenta variables explicativas relacionadas con los atributos sociodemográficos y, sobre todo, con la ideología de los legisladores. Los resultados de las regresiones logísticas muestran que el principal determinante es la valoración de la Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América (alba) y su efecto se reforzó durante la presidencia de Rousseff. Esto se debe a la caída en las evaluaciones positivas en el campo de la derecha, que tenía mejor opinión de Lula. Este texto aporta evidencia empírica de que cuando se trata de evaluar a presidentes latinoamericanos, importa más la ideología que las medidas que estos implementen en sus países. Este hallazgo contribuye a entender mejor por qué algunos liderazgos, como el de da Silva, son ideológicamente transversales.

Using data drawn from surveys of Latin American elites and citizens, this article aims to analyse the determinants of evaluations of Pope Francis, with a special focus on ideology and religious denomination, religiosity, and trustworthiness of the Catholic Church. Results show that the Pope remains linked to opinions on the Church, but not to religiosity, and that differences in personal religious affiliations (or lack thereof) among respondents are sharper among citizens than among elites. Furthermore, Pope Francis is found to be not closely associated to the left–right axis in Latin America, except in the case of Argentine MPs, where the right‐leaning members express lower opinions of the
Pope.

Abstract The creation of international organizations and the signature of free trade agreements have become common in Latin America. However, few studies have tackled the attitudes of political elites. This work aims to analyze the determinants of support by Latin American legislators for free trade agreements with the US and the EU, and for the Pacific Alliance and ALBA. Results show that ideology, pro-state/market positions, and trustworthiness vis-à-vis Chinese and Russian governments are the main predictors.

AbstractThe year 2023 was marked by a dense and turbulent political period. The country faced local and regional elections, snap elections and the reformulation of the left‐wing coalition government. Spain also chaired the Council of the European Union during the second semester. The victory of the right (the Partido Popular and Vox) in the local and regional elections held in May in 12 regions (Autonomous Communities), precipitated the call for general elections in July 2023. This process culminated in the renewal of the Sánchez coalition government with support from the Basque and Catalan pro‐independence parties and the exclusion of Podemos leaders from the new governing coalition. The decline of Podemos, the emergence of Sumar and the disappearance of Ciudadanos characterise the new Parliament. The reform of the law on sexual consent and the start of negotiations on a controversial amnesty law dominated the political agenda. In terms of the Spanish economy, the negotiation of an addendum to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan also stands out.
