This text is an edited version of the opening remarks that Thibaud Boncourt, Past President of the Research Committee 33 (The Study of Political Science as a Discipline) of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and associate professor at University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne / Centre Européen de Sociologie et de Science Politique (CESSP), gave at the special panel "The Future of the Studies of Political Science as a Discipline" sponsored by IPSA-RC33 at the 7th international interdisciplinary conference of political research SCOPE: Science of Politics (University of Bucharest, 20-24 September 2021, www.scienceofpolitics.eu). The event was organized and hosted by the Centre for the International Cooperation and Development Studies (IDC) of the Department of Comparative Governance and European Studies, Faculty of Political Science, University of Bucharest, and gathered participants from several countries on all continents, via a virtual meeting. The aim of the panel was to contribute to the global conversation on the current state of political science as a discipline, as well as to discuss the practical means through which IPSA-RC33 can contribute to it and to support the work of political scientists worldwide. Résumé L'Institut universitaire européen (IUE), ouvert en 1976 à Florence, incarne l'ambition de légitimer la construction européenne par la connaissance scientifique. Cet article cherche à comprendre comment ces injonctions politiques se réfractent dans l'activité scientifique de l'IUE, à identifier le type de savoirs produits à l'institut et à comprendre leur contribution à la structuration d'une archive européenne. À partir d'une étude de l'histoire du département de sciences politiques et sociales (SPS) sur la base d'archives diversifiées, il montre la manière dont s'impose au département une science politique béhavioraliste, quantitative et comparative de l'Europe. L'histoire de cette victoire paradigmatique met en évidence l'un des mécanismes par lesquels se structurent certaines des approches aujourd'hui centrales pour les études européennes.

How and in what way are the social sciences becoming European? This paper answers thisquestion by comparing the creation and development of eight European associations rootedin five disciplines (sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, psychology). Itshows that the Europeanisation of the social sciences is linked to different types ofcompetitions: rivalries between scientific paradigms, competitions between academicinstitutions, as well as geopolitical tensions. Europeanisation works as a resource that canbe used on these different stages, in the framework of pre-existing institutional, intellectualand political conflicts. However, the use of this resource tends to only partially achieveintended objectives. As associations grow, their objectives, practices and agendas becomeincreasingly autonomous from what their founders intended. They are also shown to berelatively confined to certain geographical areas, rather than encompassing the whole of Europe. European associations thus appear to only foster limited transnational convergence.

This study uses qualitative data on the trajectories of French military officers to provide preliminary hypotheses on the internationalisation of military careers and the dynamics of international military socialisation. It is divided into three sections. The first section provides an overview of the structure of the French armed forces and gives details on the biographical qualitative methods used throughout the article. The second and third sections describe the types of internationalisation that occur during the first and second phases of military careers respectively. The article mainly contends that French officers are unprepared for the type of internationalisation they experience in the framework of European security institutions. In spite of prior experiences of international contexts, they are forced to learn most of their work on the job and to improvise in their handling of international interactions and negotiations. These findings are shown to have implications for debates in the sociology of professions and the study of European security integration.

Comment et en quoi les sciences sociales s'internationalisent-elles ? Cet article répond à cette question en comparant la genèse et le développement de huit organisations européennes, relevant de cinq disciplines (sociologie, économie, anthropologie, science politique, psychologie). Il montre que l'internationalisation des sciences sociales renvoie à plusieurs types de concurrence : rivalités entre paradigmes scientifiques, mais aussi compétitions entre établissements universitaires, ou encore rapports de forces géopolitiques. L'internationalisation fonctionne alors comme une ressource mobilisable sur ces différentes scènes, dans le cadre de conflits qui lui préexistent et sont inséparablement intellectuels et institutionnels. L'usage de cette ressource a cependant des conséquences relativement incertaines. L'extension et les pratiques effectives des associations étudiées est parfois en décalage avec leurs objectifs originels ; et l'internationalisation scientifique semble souvent échapper au contrôle des acteurs qui l'ont impulsée.

Given the very diverse ways in which political science has been structured at the national level and the lack of interaction among national fields, the creation of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) in 1970 was, at first glance, improbable. This paper explains the genesis of this transnational scholarly organization by reference to two phases: first, by creating the International Political Science Association (IPSA), UNESCO encouraged growth in the transnational circulation of actors and knowledge involved in the study of politics; this circulation subsequently contributed to transforming the physiognomy of European national fields and created the conditions for the emergence of a subversive project for a new scholarly organization. The paper thus reveals the hybrid structure of transnational spaces in terms of the knowledge and resources that are involved. Adapted from the source document.

This work aims at contributing to the study of scientific internationalisation processes through a study of the specific case of political science from 1945 to 2010. This is done on the basis of a comparison between France and Britain and a theoretical framework revolving mainly around the concept of field and drawn from the sociology of science and political sociology. The demonstration is divided into three main parts. The first one is a comparative historical sociology of two transnational political science organisations - the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR). The second is based on a comparative study of three political science journals - the Revue Française de Science Politique, Political Studies and the European Journal of Political Research. The third lies on a comparative analysis of British and French political scientists' international careers, using material drawn from life-history interviews. The combined analysis of these three different types of data leads us to conclude that an international field of political science has progressively emerged and that this field, while partially autonomous from national developments, has its structures and rules partly linked to those of the American field. A second conclusion is the strong impact of decentralisation, autonomisation and specialisation processes on the conditions and forms of the internationalisation of national fields. ; La thèse a pour objectif de contribuer à l'étude des processus d'internationalisation scientifique à travers l'étude du cas spécifique de la science politique sur la période 1945-2010.
