In adjusting the balance of payments of British India the common practice was to apply four to five per cent of foreign trade profits. A careful comparison of trade data as reported in Britain and in India shows that the profitability was much higher than has hitherto been assumed. The implications for calculations of inflow and outflow of funds into and from India when her external trade was dominated by non-residents are far-reaching. (DÜI-Sen)
